How does Nvidia drivers handle switching between gpus?

I have a desktop at home and a laptop with an e-gpu I travel with. Every summer gets very hot running the desktop so I was thinking about pulling the gpu and putting it an enclosure and setting up everything at home where I just dock my laptop and game on that instead.
But that would mean I would constantly switch from a rtx 3060 to a rtx 3090 and if I have to reinstall the drivers twice a day, it will not spark joy.
I dont want to run the 3060 at home because the performance at 1440p is mid, it is only good for 1080p, and its less I have to carry with me

It should be fine. I switched from a 650 Ti BOOST to a 690 without having to reinstall (same GPU series, just a core jump from GK106 to GK104).

Switching from a 690 to a 3060 required a reinstall but that's because the 3060 wasn't supported by the driver I had (474.44, meant for Kepler only).

PLEASE STOP [Killing] ME I WILL GIVE Y OU ANOTHER DEAL.

I'd just turn the power down on the 3090. Should be simmilar in power to a 3060 when turned down.

for the desktop the thermals are more from the cpu side because it is fairly old and inefficient.
its kinda a $300 bet to try it though because enclosures are so much money these days

What CPU do you have now? I'd guess that 3090 is pulling way more power than the CPU.

I'd probably get a different CPU instead of a enclosure for that budget.

in bio but its ancient technology, dual xeon cpus with a massive 30% overclock that together produce roughly 580w of heat for the performance of a 12500H
it doesnt really make any sense to upgrade it since mobo cpu ram cooler costs like $800+ and I dont really use it too much. if it wasnt for the heat It does everything I need, 60fps stable in palworld at 1440p epic settings is good enough for me
