Hi,

well I will start with that I am new to server hardware and stuff. I just have some questions about intel xeon memory compatibility.

1. Does a 1st gen xeon scalable processor ( e.g. xeon gold 5115 ) will run with a 2nd gen memory ( e.g. HPE P03053-0A1 64GB 2Rx4 DDR4 2933 RDIMM ) at the processor's max speed? or will not be usable at all?

2. Does a 3rd gen xeon scalable processor run or be compatible with the same ram above that is listed at HPE memory matrix support page as a memory of a 2nd gen scalable processor.

for context I got F***ed up by buying this memory HPE P03053-0A1 64GB 2Rx4 DDR4 to install on a server with an Intel Xeon Gold 5115 processor. And my reference for buying this memory?

the existing memory which has a sticker "Partsquick 64GB PC4-23400 2933 RDIMM" but when I looked on its specs inside the server's iLO. it registered as LRDIMM without a manufacturer or part no.

I trust the sticker label of the existing installed than its specs in iLO and look it up on HPE memory matrix support page. I do know about building desk computers, gaming or for other use. but servers are new to me.

as per my 2nd question we are looking to install it on a server with a 3rdgen xeon scalabale processor if its supported.

I hope anyone could help me here.

you can see the image of what memory fooled me.

Same rules as desktop chips apply, they should run at the maximum speed of the slowest link in the chain. If your RAM runs at 2933 but the processor tops out at 2400, they'll run at 2400. If you add a 2133 DIMM, everything runs at 2133.

Try it. You won't hurt anything. Worst case, the server will throw an error code and fail to POST.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

I tried installing it. I know that LRDIMMS and RDIMMS should not be installed together. but the server memory capacity increase with a compatibility error on its iLO. which I looked on the Vsphere client the host memory, it did not add up not like with in the iLO. Total should be 512gb
