Hey all,

Been looking for a new graphics card. Had settled on the Sapphire Nitro 7900xtx. Went to order then i noticed they all say you need 3 PCIE Cables. I may have lost them but i have only 2 PCIE 8 Pins for my PSU. Which is a EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6. I think i must have lost the other cables if they were ever there in the box. Can the card run on just 2 of the PCIE cables? Or would that not work/fry my system. Oh and my CPU is a 7800x3d.

Also looking at PowerColor Hellhound 7900xtx. Which is also 3  8-pins. The gigabyte OC 7900xtx only requires 2, so i guess thats an option.

You have 2 seperate PCIe cables or just one cable with two 6+2 pin connectors? You deffinitely need two seperate cables for your GPU. It's fine to use two connectors on one cable and one connector on the 2nd cable. Just let one connector hanging down.

It needs all three 8 pins plugged in to function. If you have two cables but they have the pigtail connectors on them for 4 total connectors, you're fine. If you only have one cable with the two pigtails, you need at least another cable for the card to function.

Man please do NOT get the Gigabyte one. Gigabyte have scummy cost cutting measures with Radeon GPU. They reuse coolores ( nVidia and amd have diffrent dye size) and overall use lesser quality parts ( the have some type of deal with nvdia check it ) .PowerColor is AMD exclusive vendor and has excellent products. They along with Saphire are regarded as the top quality AMD GPU manufactures for the last 15 years. Also to say Hellhound is the top tier of PowerColor GPUs

Ok thnx! Bummed out but that is ok. Anyone recommend a $200 PSU with 850w or more and 3 PCIE 8 pin cables that is decent?

That's a modular power supply. You can just buy the cables.

EDIT:

ok looks like EVGA doesn't sell them itself anymore

Yeah, i went there. But no button to actually order said cable. Amazon ones are scary with people frying their systems because the cables are of poor quality. I would hate to have to buy a new PSU just for one card. But i really wanna upgrade soon, next month or two.

Appreciate everyones feedback. Sounds like the Gigabyte with just 2 cables is a bad way to go. Dumb question, is daisy chaining when a cable shares a connector with another connector?

Yes, like you have 1x connector going into the PSU, and then it ends up in 2x connectors going to the graphics card.

Oh duh, i missed the newegg link. It lists everything but the G6. But i imagine it would be identical to the others. Thank you for the link! 🙂

EVGA use different OEMs, so be careful. The G6 is made by Seasonic (it is a good PSU which I'd avoid replacing if possible) and might have a different pinout.

Do you have a link to what might be the correct cable? I would hate to damage something with the wrong one.

The newegg link doesn't include a part number (that I can see), so you can't compare it directly to the part number on EVGA's website, but most of the PSUs listed are the same. This is EVGA's PN: 101-CK-0850-B9.

From the review of your PSU on THG, you should have 2x PCI-E 8 pin cables with 2x connectors (in other words: 4x connectors in total) and 2x PCI-E 8 pin cables with just 1 connector each.

Yeah, guessing i lost the connectors. I have torn my room upsidie down. Found the perif cables and sata. No signs of anything PCIE cable wise. I just figured buying a cable is just more money effecient then dropping money on a new PSU. Just a little paranoid the cable will do something bad. But as far as my research has gone it should work if it fits.

I appreciate everyones time! I opened a post on the EVGA forums and make sure it's good to go, seeing as it is their speciality. So hopefully by the end of the month i'll  have a nice new 7900xtx. Now just deciding Powercolor Red Devil or Sapphire Pulse. Both sound like great options. But the Pulse is $50 cheaper.

I just noticed in another thread that surprisingly the hellhound only has 2 pci-e connectors, so that could be perfect for you?
