Enshrouded server - self-hosting?

Dedayog

Trying to figure out the easiest way to run an Enshrouded server from the house.  I'd like one that people can log into from anywhere in the US (not just on my LAN).

Going to use my Plex server in my sig... or if it's easier to use my gaming machine and just leave it on?  Like this? https://xgamingserver.com/blog/how-to-create-enshrouded-dedicated-server-hosting/

So I have looked up the Steam server guide and then various Enshrouded server guides, not sure which would be the best way to go about it.

I have to be honest, my brain shuts down on server stuff.  Not sure why but I can build a PC and troubleshoot, but server stuff just messes me up.

Looking at these guides...

Anyone running one, and if so, how difficult was it?

Edit:  if possible, since I already have a world created and a dozen+ hours in, can I migrate that world so I can continue it?

Since you plan on hosting this for anyone with an internet connection, be very careful. Allowing anyone on the internet to connect to a server or desktop pc you have on your home network will make your home network extremely vulnerable. You really have to design your home network to protect yourself against malicious behavior. There are TONS of ways to do this safely so you really need to research the best possible way that fits with your goals.

I would STRONGLY suggest you don't make anything directly accessible from the internet.

If you need the internet connectivity, but don't want to make your home network vulnerable, you can use a service like Linode to make the server in the cloud. Let them deal with protecting the server. You'll have to pay a monthly fee to rent their cloud servers, but that's a small price to pay versus getting your home network pwnd.

If you set up a Minecraft or Counter-Strike server it's all pretty much the same. I'm a visual person and that video guide is the way for me with a mixture of copying line commands from the article. Follow the instructions and install it on your dedicated plex server. I imagine copying over your current world to your new server is possible. Again it just seems like creating a MC server with a splice of CS.

I'll second @BIOSID10T's recommendations.

Hosting stuff from home (for the public) is usually a very bad idea. If someone decides to DOS your server, it'll directly affect your ability to do anything on the internet. And if someone manages to break in, they're in your home network, which could potentially provide them with access to all kinds of sensitive information. If they manage to break into a server running somewhere else that doesn't do anything other than host the game, much less damage potential.

Additionally, hosting stuff at home might break the ToS of your ISP (so make sure to check). Even if it doesn't, you can run into issues like them blocking certain ports (for security reasons) or them using some crippled IPv6 setup where your home network isn't reachable from the outside world at all. Plus, you likely have more downstream than upstream and for a server upstream is much more important.

Remember to either quote or @mention others, so they are notified of your reply

Hmm, makes sense what everyone is saying...

So, how easy is it to just run one on my LAN for myself, the kid and the gf to play while my main machine is off?

Or just leave my main machine running the game and dealing with it?
