Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly FPS, some newer AAA games.

I built this PC when I was around 11 with (regrettably) little guidance from my father. I've made minor changes over the years, new ram, a new CPU cooler, and an SSD. I would like to start slowly upgrading my build to play newer games more smoothly without issues. I don't need the top of the line or anything I would just like to comfortably play at a decently high FPS. I would eventually like to have up to 3 monitors so please take that into consideration.

I am also willing to sell parts, or my entire build if that is recommended.

Since you have the coolest GPU (GTX 1080) that has ever existed even for current standard, I would probably recommend upgrading the CPU to Ryzen 5800X3D if you have the budget, or just to 5600X.

It would be better if you could share the budget range and gaming resolution.

Upgrading RAM to 3600MHz might improve your FPS as well, but it's probably less than 5%, so I wouldn't prioritize that

What’s your budget?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I'm not sure about my exact budget but I'm 18 with no real expenses, so probably around $300 USD for my CPU. Not sure about other parts.

In that case, as long as you're conscious of your budget, 5800X3D could still be a good choice, it's $315, a bit over of your budget, but it is the very best gaming CPU for AM4 platform

Since you're coming from Ryzen 1700X CPU, I would suggest for you to update your Motherboard's BIOS before installing the new CPU onto your rig

Just curious, could you share on your current FPS performance and monitor screen specs on your current rig?

FPS performance in what game and settings? Also currently I have a single 1080p monitor but would like to eventually upgrade to 3 1440p monitors (the dream would be 1 4k monitor and 2 1440p monitors but that seems far-fetched for me right now).

I don't understand the cooler "upgrade". I just bought this cooler and the one you provided is seemingly worse.

As for the storage I'm worried about storing data long term. Right now I have a single NVME SSD to store my games and programs and a HDD to store important documents. I am looking to build a NAS but that is for the future.

Just upgrade the CPU to 5800X3D and you should be fine. With FSR, that GTX 1080 should keep well above 80FPS at 1080p. For 1440p though, depending on the game, you might need a 1080Ti. Just for reference, this is Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p High with my old GTX 1070 non-Ti with FSR at Balanced, just after i upgraded to my 5800X3D from the 5600X.

For the game option, preferably the modern AAA title to know your current FPS and expected gain after the upgrade

The settings is up to you, if it barely runs at even 30FPS, probably should go easy on the setting at "Low"

I see, for the 3 monitors setup, is it just single 1440p monitor for gaming while the other 2 for other process (such as streaming, notes, etc) or the whole 3 1440p monitors for the "ultra wide" experience?

Because 3 1440p monitors has even more pixel accumulation than a single 4K monitor, which means you're gonna need an even more powerful GPU and PSU to power it

In case of gaming focus on the single 1440p monitor, I would suggest to stick to your current GTX 1080 GPU, and you can even use AMD's upscaling FSR for modern AAA title (yes, even though your GPU is NVIDIA, you can still use FSR for upscaling to gain higher FPS)

Yes, I recommend getting a whole new PC. You might be able to get maybe $200-$250 for your current PC.
