Hi all, I currently have an 8TB Seagate Barracuda for my general storage, (I have M.2's for my boot drive and gaming) I'm looking to switch it for an SSD or two, basically to increase the speed but mainly to get rid of the noisy mechanical drive. I'm just wondering to I need to get a decent SSD or can I just stick a cheap one in there? It's basically just used for my media, movies and music and such.

Just to clarify, when I say cheap, I mean going off-brand. Cheapest I can possibly get. It's just going to be used for media storage and playback, I can't imagine read/write speeds being an issue. Hell I'm using a mechanical drive at the moment so anything is an improvement. Been looking at a Fikwot FS810 4TB 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - SATA III 6Gb/s, 3D NAND TLC Internal SSD, Up to 550MB/s. Just wondering if it's worth it to save 40-50 bucks.

You can use any drive you like so long as you either a) backup important data or b) don't care about the data. 😉

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, 5060 Ti) Mobile: Moto Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024) | 30GB CAN+US+MEX $30/month
Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

Good to know, there's not going to be anything important on it, and nothing that I can't download again if it fails. Just wondering if anybody had any bad experiences with cheap or off-brand SSD's. I know there are some fake ones out there.

as long as it's not completely no brand you'll be find getting the cheapest ones from a known brands.

kingston, patroit, A-TEAM, etc. Just no Chinese knockoffs. Inland is a pretty cheap brand for SSD

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT
