Thanks for your input, but i dont see why should i upgrade my cpu, i have a good corsair case with 4 rgb fans, that has the fan controller thingy on the back, so neither will i be upgrading that.

As it is now, i want to upgrade only the motherboard and switch to ddr5 ram, now when i thought about it, going for such an expensive mobo is a bit stoopid.

My budget is around 1000-1250 eur, thats why i picked that motherboard.

I dont want to upgrade my cpu, as i dont see the benefit of that, as this i5 is already enough for my games.

What i am truly looking for is a z790 motherboard and really good ram for my 13600kf.

So after reconsidering everything i would take ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI instead of The dark hero

Yet the ram, im still thinking about CORSAIR Dominator Platinum RGB as the case, case fans, aio cooler and now the ram would be all from corsair.

I want to go for a premium board as it has more connectivity on the back + i need the built in wifi, right now i have a pcie card for wifi, but i want to get rid of it,

I already have alot of stuff plugged in at the back of my current motherboard, and sometimes my Mic becomes quiet or cuts out (this i have solved by plugging in my audio interface to a usb 3.2 port), yet i still want to get a webcam.

Yes, i am slowly preparing to do some streams on twitch/kick,

Here is the gear i have, maybe i could upgrade some of it aswell.

I already have a "gaming" chair.

Headset : SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless
Mousepad : LTT Northern Lights
Keyboard : Corsair K70 M.K2
Mouse : SteelSeries Rival 650 Wireless
Monitor : 2x Samsung Odyssey G7 (2560x1440) 240Hz
Mic : Rode NT1-A
Audio Interface : Focusrite Scarlet Solo (3rd Gen)

I know that most of this stuff is not necessary but i just like having neat/good things for my setup, im a nerd like that 😄

Thanks for explainig that to me, and knocking some sense that going for that option would be too much overkill even if i dont give a crap about money.

Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI II ATX LGA1700 Motherboard  (€559.00 @ Amazon Netherlands)
Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory  (€209.00 @ Amazon Netherlands)

Hello everyone, i have decided to make a little upgrade to my current gaming setup!

My current setup is

CPU:Intel Core i5 13600KF (6+8 cores)
CPU Cooler: Corsair iCUE H100i Elite Capellix
RAM: 32GB DDR4 Kingston Fury Beast RGB (2x16GB)
MotherBoard:ASUS PRIME B760-PLUS D4
GPU: INNO3D RTX 4080 16GB
Storage: 2TB Kingston NV2 NVMe ; Samsung 870 EVO 1TB
OS: Windows 11 PRO 64-bit
PSU: 1000W Corsair RM1000e

I am thinking to upgrade my motherboard to ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 Dark Hero and the ram to Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 5600mhz, aswell to replace the 870 evo with a samsung 990 pro 2tb pcie gen 4 m.2 ssd

The question i have is i read on ASUS site that if i use the first m.2 slot and the x16 gpu slot, the pcie switches to pcie gen 5 8x/8x

And now this is where i am confused, will the lesser lanes have an effect on the performance of my GPU/ NVMe m.2

As i know that neither the samsung 990 pro, nor 4080 are a gen 5 devices, and that the gen 5 x8 = gen 4 16x

I mean it doesnt make sense to me that if i get this expensive board and plug everything in and then all of it runs at half speed, but i am not sure and i dont understand this gen4/gen5 stuff.

Can some one explain?

Or should i go with something else?

I plan to use the WIFI on the mobo, and most of the USB ports on the back.

help?

Why? Neither of these parts make sense to buy, especially considering how you can get a 14900K, a reasonable ~$200 motherboard, and an actually decent memory speed (6400 CL32) for the price of both of those.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DzZkz6

Either that or save quite a bit of money and get a 7800X3D setup instead, giving both better gaming performance while being significantly lower power consumption and cheaper, even if you do want a higher end motherboard.

Not exactly, if you use the M.2_1 slot, the primary PCIe x16 slot switches to x8 and the secondary PCIe x16 slot is disabled.

Bandwidth wise, yes, but if you plug a Gen 4 x16 card into a Gen 5 x8 slot, it will only run at Gen 4 x8. The PCIe generation and the link width both run at the least common denominator, so if you were to plug in a hypothetical Gen 5 x1 card into a PCIe Gen 1.1 x16 slot or vice versa, it will only run at PCIe Gen 1.1 x1.

Yes, but no. The GPU will have half the bandwidth (this doesn't mean all that much, it's usually only a ~3-5% performance decrease in games), but only if you use the M.2_1 slot. If you use any other M.2 slot, this doesn't apply.

Hello... @RONOTHAN## has already explained about the PCIe 4.0/5.0 Speed options.

If you wanted a true upgrade path I would go with something like this. I have upgraded the CPU, AIO Cooler, Motherboard, RAM (w/ correct Speeds for DDR5), added the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, and a new Case. This new Case is really cool. It comes with a GPU Support Bar, Digital LCD Screen that will show not only the CPU Temps but others things like CPU Speed, GPU Temps & Speeds. It also includes 3 140mm ARGB Fans in the Front and I added 3 more 120mm ARGB Fans, 1 for the Rear, and 2 for the top of the PSU Shroud to help Cool off the GPU with a Fan Controller Hub. I think you will really love this.

The reason I said get a new CPU was to show just how expensive that motherboard was. It's more expensive than the top of the line CPU on the socket and makes no sense to pair with a 13600k, especially since you won't see that much of a performance uplift.

Honestly, this entire upgrade seems pointless if you're not upgrading the CPU at the same time IMO. DDR5 is faster than DDR4, yes, but it's not that much faster. It's about 10% at most in almost all gaming situations, and with how expensive it is to go with DDR5 from here, it just isn't worth it.

If all you need is rear USB ports and WiFi, you can get by with something like a Z790 UD AC or Z790 Aorus Elite AX. That will be less than half the cost of the Z790-E with all the performance. Unless you need something like Thunderbolt, rear IO maxes out around the $200 mark and there's not really a reason to spend any more than it.

Will you be overclocking and dialling in memory timings to a tee? If not then almost all RAM that isnt going to break the bank, vengeance, trident, etc are exactly the same as dominator. All dominator provides is top of the line dies for large overclocking headroom, but runs just the same as any other RAM on the market thats half the price if youre not looking to overclock, i.e. it will provide no performance uplift or stability if you run it at stock XMP over another kit

Likewise with the motherboard, there are plenty of very decked out motherboards without the ROG branding shooting the price up, yes your budget might be high, but why spend an extra 2, 3, 400 extra that you dont need to for features you wont use or will find on another board for half the price

MSIs tomahawk and carbon series are both pretty good for 200-400 less than the ROG boards above, Asrock are killing it in value for money right now with good quality boards for a good price, gigabytes Aorus range is very aesthetically pleasing also for a few hundred less if youre looking for top range with great aesthetics

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO+

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

Case Fans: Fractal Prisma (120 x6, 140 x3) + 2x40mm fans
