bios version, cpu change

Hello, I have ryzen 7 5700g and aourus b450 elite. The problem is that dual channel wont work with this combination. The problem seems to be cpu, as i have tested different cpu on this same mb and the slots are working. If i change the cpu to ryzen 5 5500 do i need to change bios version?

Also, what do i gain or lose performance wise switching to r5 5500 and dual channel from r7 5700g single Gpu rtx 3060

What BIOS do you have?  If you're on the latest, and you still can't do dual channel, there is a larger issue.

Agree with the above. Sounds like a hardware defect on the cpu. Maybe bent pins?

 

Either way single channel can have up to 50% lower performance and will induce stuttering in games regardless. Ryzen runs incredibly poorly on single vhannel.

 

If you have warranty on the 5700g claim it and send it in for repairs. The 5500 is a good downgrade BUT will be better than a single channel 5700g

Yes, this.

 

If you really need to, go with a 5600.  it's like the 5700g anyway, just without the APU side.

I have a spare pc with b450 pro4 r.20 Mb around. i can put the 5700g there and test if dual channel works there. The bios version on that pc currently is p5.70.

Short answer is yes.  You can just toss it in.  Though I would set BIOS to "load optimized defaults" or whatever it's called once you do.

Is there any other reason why the dual channel won't work besides the cpu? I tested ryzen 5 2600 in this same motherboard a week ago and dual channel was working. I'm guessing there can't be a possibility that the motherboard is faulty if the 2600 worked right? 

Can i safely test the 5700g in my other pc which has b450m pr4 r.20 mb with bios version p5.70 or i have to update the bios before testing?

No other reason.  F63 supports the 5700G, so unless your CPU has a broke memory controller...

 

Throw the 5500, and if the dual channel works (and since it did on the 2600) you have your answer.  The 5700G is defective.

 

For the Asus board, the p5.70 BIOS supports the 5700G as well, so toss it in to test.

 

Nothing else needed, just swap CPU's and let us know.

So I did the switch and dual channel works just fine with 5500. But here's the fun thing. On the asus board the 5700g works in dual channel as well.

Interesting, so the AORUS B450 ELite actually has an impact on the RAM.  While that';s a stout board, can't rule out a defect.

 

So the board is the issue then.  Glad you figured it out.
