Same driver on newer gpu model?

Go to solution Solved by _Omega_,

It should work fine, but Id still DDU the driver before installing the new GPU.

They're basically the same card, so it should be fine.

If you were changing between different generations, you'd want to uninstall the current version, change cards, then install the latest version. Switching between chip manufacturers (AMD, Intel, Nvidia) would absolutely require a reinstall.

can switching gpu models affect drivers? for example if i switched from an msi rtx 3080 to an asus one but its still a 3080 would that affect the gpu drivers that i already had installed on msi model? would it cause issues?

It shouldn't cause any issues!  But you know, Computers do be computers.. And errors and crashes can happen.

IF you run into any issues then use DDU ( Display Driver Uninstaller ) and reinstall the GPU drivers.

Shouldn't be needed however 🙂

well i did first plug in a 10 series card for testing then i switched back to the 40 series all on the same driver, im guessing that can cause issues right?

Shouldn't cause any issues 🙂  The drivers usually work for all cards. Nvidia drivers are very nice this way.

But as mentioned, IF you run into any issues then you should reinstall the drivers and use DDU to do a fresh driver install. But this is only if you run into problems.

Just swap cards and use them 🙂 DDU if errors or crashes happen.

Nah. As long as the version you have installed supports both generations, it's fine.

That said, a DDU and clean install never hurt anybody either.

Awesome! Glad you got it sorted out 🙂  DDU usually does the trick if some issues happen when swapping cards.

Mostly done when moving from AMD to Nvidia and vice versa! But as mentioned above, Computer do be computers 😄
They do funny business sometimes.
