Hi, I'm building a new pc to replace my current one, which has an i5-7600, GTX 1080, 32GB 2 sticks, built ~2017. I can reuse existing peripherals, including 1080p 244Hz monitor. I'm planning on playing AAA games and FPSs. Recently I'm running into frame rate issues on lower graphics settings than I'd like for some games, and I'm looking for something that will give me a noticeable performance bump.

I picked out some components that look like a good value:

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RQ8gZJ

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($99.00 @ B&H)
Motherboard: Asus TUF GAMING B550-PLUS WIFI II ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($149.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-4600 CL19 Memory  ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Black SN850X 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($119.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Speedster MERC 319 CORE Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB Video Card  ($499.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Montech AIR 903 BASE ATX Mid Tower Case  ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($84.90 @ Newegg Sellers)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Retail - Download 64-bit  ($199.00 @ Newegg)
Total: $1352.85

  • Are these components well matched together to support gaming? E.g. is the CPU underpowered compared to the GPU?
  • The case has a USB-C on the front, but the motherboard doesn't have a header to support it which is unfortunate. Any motherboard recommendations?

You can do a fair bit better for a system like this.

  1. AM4 only makes sense to buy for the absolute cheapest of systems. By the time you're spending ~$400 on the CPU/mobo/RAM combo, you should really be going AM5 instead.
  2. The SSD is a bit overkill for what you're trying to do, you can save ~$30 by going for something a little lower end.
  3. You don't need a Windows license for $200, you can get a key from a reseller for ~$20.
  4. For the GPU, the 4070 is ~$30 more, and odds are you'd make that money back on your power bill. In traditional rasterization performance, they're about equal, but the 4070 has more features, better RT performance, and significantly lower power draw.

There's three options I see for a system of this budget:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4PnRn6

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kmkQwg

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/R8J3Wt

Each of those has its pros and cons. The first two are slightly over budget (~$50 and $10 respectively), though they're also incredibly fast. The first build cost cuts the CPU to go for as high end a GPU as possible (it's still a decent combo, though, don't think there's a bottleneck). The second build tries to fit a 7800X3D in for the CPU, which is the fastest gaming CPU you can get for your money at the moment, which might help for more high refresh rate games if you're doing more competitive things and should allow for future GPU upgrade in the same system. The third built is the compromise version that's got cheaper of both and is ~$150 under budget that you can put towards games of some sort.

You don't want 4600Mhz RAM, you want 3200-3600Mhz RAM and 18CL and less, (for AM4)

I'm not aware of any good Motherboards that include USB-C header, but for AM4 you want a Motherboard with a heatsink first and then you look if it has USB-C header

I have 2 lists, each has it's benefits and weaknesses,

you don't need to follow it, but be careful of things like PSU quality or motherboard VRM (VRM on AM4 not AM5, AM5 is good VRM wise on any B650 board)

RAM is overkill too, SSD is fine for high quality unit

AM4 is a slower cheaper build:

@RONOTHAN##'s builds are very good, they fit 7900 XT, a very powerful GPU, and the 7600 CPU can keep up with it, despite being the cheapest AM5

also very good tips he noted

Run further. Also in current Windows climate i can only recommend purchasing Pro if you actually in need of pro-specific features, Home is already more than enough for 90% of the installation base. And i would recommend you activating said Windows later rather than right on install, even unactivated windows has more feature than ever in its history.

@RONOTHAN## 7800X3D caught my eye at first but that Gigabyte board is not ideal to my taste for board quality so i would recommend the B650M-HDV instead. But mind you im practically nitpicking for reliability sake, that would be a pretty killer rig either way for competitive 1080p for years to come.

Here's something id build with overbudget in mind, but with it we got full fat ATX board, better case to build on, and 850W PSU. This is the mATX compression of it.

They're both well reviewed boards, and since the DS3H is $10 cheaper I'd rather have that.

I agree that AM5 is a better option, and I like the idea of lower power consumption for graphics card. Good call on the windows license...

Where is that site that has Windows licenses at a good price? I can't remember the name of it.

It pushed my budget a bit, but I like it better: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fdKtkJ

I didn't want to give the OP some cheap Asrock mATX board with subpar VRM's so I stuck with the thread title, kept well within the budget and posted a much better build than what the OP posted.

B650 boards without heatsink are still well above spec when it comes to VRMs (the non M versions at least)
