Hogwarts Legacy, Ray Tracing and DirectX Errors/Crashes

happysw

Hello everyone!

After many hours of troubleshooting I’ve decided it’s time to call on this forum for help.

I have built a new PC a couple of weeks ago, which ran perfectly fine up until now. Only been playing somewhat older titles on it (Red Dead 2 and Metro Exodus for example). I picked up Hogwarts Legacy recently and I have been getting frequent crashes to desktop, the error logs point to DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. The crashes basically only happen when coming in and out of cutscenes and conversations. Only had one (out of 15) during actual gameplay.

My specs are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Mobo: B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI

RAM: 2x 16GB G.Skill Flare EXPO X5 6000 CL32

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 Founders Edition

PSU: Corsair RM850x

CPU Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE

OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2

GPU Driver: 546.33

BIOS: 7E26v17

Game settings: Ultra Preset with RT Ultra, DLSS Quality at 1440p and Frame-Gen enabled.

I’ve done some digging and have tried the following (not necessarily in this order lol)

  • Checked temps: GPU/CPU temps never went above 70 degrees
  • Disabled any and all overlays completely. Steam, NVIDIA Experience, RTSS.
  • DDUed GPU driver and clean installed it again
  • Disabled EXPO
  • Disabled PBO
  • Reverted (teensy) GPU overclock
  • Increasing pagefile size
  • Verified game integrity
  • Checked RAM with TM5 and MemTest

I also tried playing with the game settings. I’ve now basically narrowed it down to: RT on (at any level) = Crashes galore with the aforementioned error in the logs & RT off = No crashes. No other setting seems to influence stability.

Now the big question for you guys: What the frick is going on? My running theories:

  1. Bad game/PC version (why would it throw that error tough?)
  2. Defective GPU or RT cores (is the latter even a thing?)
  3. Saturn is in retrograde

Is there anything else I could try?

5600x + 4070 Super founder edition. Same issue.
If I turn off Resizable Bar at BIOS, can turn on the Ray Tracing but Frame Gen will be disable.
