Budget (including currency):  Undecided

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Other details Currently I am using an Athlon 3000G and A-320M MB

I am looking for a considerable upgrade. While my current PC can handle the games that I play quite well. It does struggle when attempting to run Virtual Machines. Ideally I would like my new PC to be able to run 3 consecutive Windows virtual machines. I prefer AMD over Intel and after looking at my options like the idea of a 7800X3D which I know is overkill but allows me to broaden my usage late on.

For my MB I would like to have at least 4xDDR5 slots, 2 m.2 NVME (PCIe 4.0+) and 4 (but preferably 6 SATA slots).

For GPU I would like to be able to use 3 monitors. so I would need a GPU capable of that.

I also need advise on water cooling vs air cooling.

Finally and I don't know if this is possible I would like an included CD-ROM drive. I am aware that these are outdated but I have an extensive collection of DVDs that I currently have to use a USB disc player for

Normally I would know what to do but I haven't been keeping up with the last few generations of parts.

Many Thanks,

Will

I'm not from UK so I can't really help you with specific retail choices, but I might be able to give you some pointers.

For your MB needs you're probably gonna have to use a full sized MB (ATX), more midrange.

As for the GPU, most GPUs these days come with 3 outputs (usually 2DP+1HDMI or 3DP) so you should be fine any that have 3 outputs.

I vote air cooling, easier to maintain, cheaper, and sufficient in most cases (unless you're going to the top of the line of the consumer processors)

You still can put in a CD/DVD drive, but you can also get an external one if that's more convinient for you.

Good luck!

Everything depends on your loads, are you gaming? what games? what resolution? If it's online virtual machines i'd probably go with something like a Ryzen 5 7600X or a 7 7800X3d, for GPU really depends but something capable and still not crazy overpriced is the 7800xt from AMD, ram i'd go with 2x32Gb... And air cooler (although depend on ur CPU), i think we need a little bit more info for us to be able to help you.

I'm sorry if i made any spelling mistakes, i'm not an English speaker.

@Guille.R

Thank you for your reply

Apologise I meant to put7800X3D in the post. I have corrected that. The VMs will be locally hosted (Virtual Box) but will only be running some of the time. My main monitor is a Pavilion 22XI which is 1080P 60Hz, As for games, most of my games are not intensive such as Stardew Valley or Prison Architect. My most intensive game is probably Euro Truck Simulator 2. However I plan on playing the Borderlands Franchise and No Man's Sky on my new PC.

Also you recommended a AMD GPU. Is there a benefit of AMD over NVIDIA when going with a AMD CPU

Many Thanks,

Will

There is no benefit by using AMD+AMD combo, it’s just what I think offers the best bang for the buck.

I haven’t found much cases with 5.2” bays so I’d  recommend just buying an external usb dvd reproductor, if u still want it inside the case here are some options:

https://graphicscardhub.com/pc-case-5-25-bay/

This build I recommend is a pretty common one but I’ll explain my rationality behind the selection:

CPU: Is a very good CPU for gaming and with enough cores for VMs as well as not being neither overpriced nor super consuming.

Cooler: Good cooler, although not super silent, very cheap.

Mobo: It’s a mATX but that shouldn’t be a problem, it has enough I/o and good VRM, only 4 SATA but if u want more I’d recommend buying a controller card.

Memory: If u need for than 32Gb for the VMs you can totally get a 2x32 or even a 2x48 or up to a 4x32 but I think 32gb is pretty reasonable, about speed the best right now do to stability issues is 6000mhz and latency as low as possible CL30, also this kit is low so it fits under the cooler and has EXPO the equivalent to the XMP of Intel but for AMD.

Storage: u should choose what u need but this is a super solid very reliable and fast 2tb ssd so…

GPU: Not super overpriced and sufficiently power for three monitors and euro truck simulator, but if u need more power for VMs there are a lot of options.

Case: It’s a solid, easy to build in, good airflow case with some RGB, and it’s mATX or mini-ITX only do it won’t look over dimensioned with your mobo.

PSU: It’s sufficient wattage looking into the future, from a reputable brand high efficiency high quality and not very expensive…

If I change anything remember to check clearance between ram and cooler, gpu and case and PSU and case.

I'm sorry if i made any spelling mistakes, i'm not an English speaker.
