When formatting hard disk drives, when should one use GPT instead of MBR?

If you use MBR on a drive with over 2TB, the capacity above 2TB will be unseen (similar to over 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit OS...).  GPT will allow the full capacity to be used instead of just the first 2TB.

Does anyone know if there are any differences in performance between a drive formatted with MBR and a drive formatted with GPT?
