I had a 4070ti kind of fall into my lap, I'm wondering if there's a cpu that'll work with my current mobo(MSI b450 Gaming Plus) that'll attempt to keep up, or if I should just shell out for a new mobo/cpu/ram package. At that point I'd probably just bite the bullet and build the whole PC.

Current build is a r5 3600, 4x8GB ddr4(base speed is 3000, I oc'd it and dont remember the speed I settled at), Corsair rm850x.

Not currently asking for budget advice or anything, just if there's a reasonable upgrade in my current system to match the 4070ti or not.

Update the BIOS and buy a 5800X3D 馃檪聽 The 5800X3D keeps up extremely well with even the latest CPU's and is a perfect match for the 4070ti.

I would guess you will be gaming at 1440p 144hz and that would be a nice setup indeed.

If you want to spend a little money then the 7800X3D + B650 motherboard would be the next step up from the 5800X3D in my opinion. You would also need new DDR5 RAM.

^^^

Theyre around 200-250$ used and will definitely keep up with a 4070ti

If you are using the stock cooler on your 3600 youll def need to buy a new cooler (unless it happens to be a wraith prism/max), but any 4 heatpipe 120mm tower will do since the 5800x3d will run hot regardless of water or air cooling due to the insulating cache

You can drop it in your board and yes it should handle the 5800x3d just fine as it isnt that power hungry so no need for vrm fans or board upgrades

Good call on the cooler!聽 I would guess we both would easily recommend the Peerless Assassin SE 120

Currently using a deep cool 240mm aio. I should have mentioned that. I didn't think the board would handle that chip, so that's probably what I'll do, along with a ram upgrade. Thank God ddr4 is dirt cheap these days

Thanks! I didn't think the board would handle that chip, but since it seems I was wrong, that's what I'll do. I'll probably go ahead and grab a 3600mhz ram set too since ddr4 is cheap these days

Understandable. Nothing wrong with that board 馃檪聽 Just use the 3600 to update the BIOS, the 3600 might stop working with the newest BIOS update but it will make the Ryzen 5000 series work in that board so only update once you get the 5800X3D.

Your Deepcool 240mm will be plenty 馃檪

3600mhz RAM will definitely help.

Thats a waste of money and youll see a performance decrease due to single rank instead of dual rank rams

Send a pic of thaiphoon burner to identify the ram ics, ~3800 is what you wanna aim for

I'm curious why you think there'd be a performance decrease by upgrading the CPU and ram. Am I misunderstanding you?

Im implying your ram "upgrade" will be more like a sidegrade or outright downgrade

Dual rank > single rank so if your current rams are running at 3000 thatd be equivalent to a 3400-3800 single rank kit, hence why i suggest overclocking your rams abit more instead of sidegrading them

Though shouldnt matter that much since the 5800x3d doesnt care that much about ram performance

You're kind of making a big assumption there, but okay.
