New Build- need opinions!

TheLazurus24

Budget (including currency): $1500-$2000 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AAA titles, VR, mostly a little bit of everything. I'm also an extreme multitasker so watching videos while gaming is fairly likely.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I have a parts list already put together but I was looking for some opinions on it. I'm coming from a Ryzen 5 2600/1660Ti rig, with 16gb ram.

Current parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CrjFbL

Not bad, it's a pretty good build, there's just a couple things I might swap:

  1. The RAM kit isn't particularly great. It's not going to cause that much of a performance loss on the X3D chips, but at the same time a 6000 CL30 kit (about the fastest you can get on Ryzen 7000) is the exact same price, so you might as well.
  2. If a 4070 is $20 more than the 7800 XT, I'd get it instead. It's significantly lower power consumption, you get the extra Nvidia feature set, and from what I know VR performance is a fair bit better on Nvidia cards in general. Both are fine cards, and for the original $100 price difference the 4070 didn't make sense, but nowadays when they're nearly the same price the 4070 is the better value IMO.
  3. I'd probably swap out the case for the Lian Li Lancool 216 since it's a better case and not that much more expensive, though if you prefer the look of the Montech case that's fine as well.

I'm a bit out of the loop with builds since I haven't built in so long, but isn't the 4070 technically a weaker card? I'd like this rig to last a little while without major upgrades.

They trade blows, on average they're within 5% of each other overall, so I wouldn't really consider one weaker than the other. The only issue the 4070 might have is the 4GB less VRAM, so if the trend continues of games using insane amounts of VRAM the 4070 might not hold up quite as well in the long run, though I have a hard time seeing that happen in the next 4-5 years at 1440p, and by that time you'll probably want to upgrade the 4070 anyway.

I don't have the exact model off hand, but it's a 1080p 165hz monitor. I also have another 1080p display off to the side for multitasking and a 3rd 768p for whatever else i need visible.

This offers you low latency RAM, ATX 3.0 psu, a better case than the Montech, an SSD with DRAM cache and a cpu that's better at multitasking. The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.
