I recently downloaded plex on my pc and it's great. Just it isn't a server and I don't want it running for 24 hours. I have a real old core 2 duo machine. If I get it back up and running, will it give actual useable performance or no?

At best, it'll be highly dependent on WHICH Core 2 Duo it has, and is going to likely require lightweight Linux to be performance enough to run smoothly, and at that, unless you have PlexPass to enable GPU encoding, it will likely be limited to one or two 720p streams.

If you don't want it to be running 24/7, why are you thinking of hosting it on a dedicated machine?

If you are going to go through the trouble of turning on a different machine every time you are gonna use it might as well just leave it on your pc. But hey, that's just my take.

The gaming box might be a higher power system, and the goal is to have a system that uses less power and creates less heat for 24/7 use, and only turn on the gaming box for gaming or high power use.

Yeah, so it was released close to the year 2000... might need to upgrade to a Celeron, as it cant even play a 720p YouTube video locally. I didn't know that the pc handled the playback.
