minimal damage, because thermal throttle is designed to protect the CPU from thermal damage. It's better that the PC was shutting down, because it was basically hitting the emergency brakes.

My friend’s i7-4790K has been thermal throttling like crazy for the past month or so. Yesterday he told me his PC had been shutting down randomly for a while, so we checked HWinfo and it was consistently over 90*, even at idle. I had a look at his PC and one of the corners of his CPU cooler mount had snapped, so it wasnt making contact properly.

How much damage will this have done to the CPU, if any? And will this affect the performance? Thanks.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.
