Z87 vs Z97

What are the differences between the two chipsets???

The main differences are:

• Z97 boards can support current Haswell/Haswell Refresh CPUs as well as the upcoming "Devils Canyon" and Broadwell CPUs.
• Z97 has support for SATA Express and M.2 drives.

Z87 supports 4th generation haswell processors socket 1150

 

Z97 supports 4th generation haswell processors, haswell refresh, the upcoming "devil's canyon" processors and the future broadwell processors (5th generation)

 

In terms of features, bells and wissels, etc ... i haven't looked into it.

Put it this way, theres no big difference between them in the stuff most people will use, but z97 supports the upcoming cpus as well as the Haswell Refresh. 

 

z87 supports the Haswell like 4670k, 4770k, 4130 etc.  In my opinion z97 is not worth it UNLESS you are upgrading to a Haswell Refresh processor or an upcoming deviles canyon processor. z87 does support sata express and the BIOS of for example the Asus bios has had some extra little touches but nothing big.  

 

But if your just using a single or SLI/Crossfire GPUs and a single SSD and a hard drive and your using a Haswell CPU or want a Haswell CPU in all honesty the z87 boards are going to be cheaper and a bit more worth your money imo.  But if you want the little extras, go for z97.

sata express, which is something brand new which you probably wont use until at least a few months.  Sata express just means you can get faster hard drive performance in theory, you'll get allot more M.2 support and M.2 allows for M.2 SSDs which are super fast SSDs but probably really expensive, You'll get the latest BIOS refresh from the manufactures.  Those kinds of things.
