GPU Upgrade question

I really don't have a preference. I just need the best for the value paid ... I guess it might be AMD then 😉

The only major selling points of Nvidia is the NVENC encoder for streaming and its other benefits. Ray tracing performance is marginally better, but outside of the top cards, RT performance is still not great enough to match the rest of the settings the card could otherwise get (that being low-medium RT and the rest being high/ultra capable outside of the 4080/4090/7900 XT/XTX).

So either way, I imagine you want to upgrade the 1660 Super. To get the money's worth, you'd want to buy at least a 6700 XT that are around $300 USD right now. If your budget is $500-550, then a 6700 XT would afford you a 5600x3D drop in CPU upgrade. Otherwise, if you bought a 7800 XT now, then saved up a few hundred for a CPU upgrade, you'd have yourself one of the best long term value systems you can buy right now, being a 5600x3D/5800x3D and 7800 XT. You've got the right base parts to justify it, being a PCIe 4.0 capable motherboard and a solid DDR4 kit of RAM.

Hi, fantastic community,

I have the below configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • RAM: 32GB
  • MB: Asus Tuf Gamin B550m
  • GPU: Gigabyte 1660 Super
  • PSU: Corsair 650

I want to upgrade the GPU to "Asus Tuf Gaming RTX 3060TI or 4060TI" Will that work fine with the current CPU, or is it an overkill for it? also, do I need to update the PSU?

A 650W PSU should be fine.

In regards to the CPU, it seems like what you're asking about is a "bottleneck." My advice is that generally you should buy the best GPU you have the budget for. If you buy a weaker GPU for the sake of not being "overkill" for an older CPU you can get stuck in a cycle of buying weaker parts and having to replace them more frequently.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

That was a build back in Mid 2020 and I'm willing to change the CPU but not now. Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it.

What's your actual budget for the GPU?  AMD makes great midrage GPU's that are better buys than the 3060/4060 lineup.

500 - 550 USD

Look at 6800XT's or 7800XT's.  Or even a 4070, not sure what's available to you where you are.

I concur with @Agall, buy the best you can afford.  And enjoy it 🙂

Then next upgrade cycle, move up to a new CPU/mobo/DDR5.

What kind of games do you play?

TBH, if its mostly multiplayer games, I'd say you're better off buying a 5800x3D and the best GPU you can afford with the rest of the budget.

Upgrade the cpu to a 5800X3D (possibly 5600X3D if you live near a microcenter) and get a used 6700 xt for about $250

That's a hard sell for a CPU upgrade, since outside of the 5800x3D, the other jumps aren't substantial enough to justify a 5700x or so in my opinion.

I'd snag a 7800 XT or RTX 4070 12GB (only if you're bias to Nvidia) then look at potentially a drop in CPU upgrade, like the 5800x3D or the other 5000x3D CPUs that might be dropping on the market within the next few months.

I really don't have a preference. I just need the best for the value paid ... I guess it might be AMD then 😉
