Hello, I bought a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP's from Amazon almost a year ago and I was okay that they leaked because I don't use them in public, but the thing that does bother me is that 1000's of reviews say how bass heavy they are, how they are comparable to beats, but in my ~11 months of owning them I barely feel the bass at all.  I've listened to beats and those things rumble my ears, but I'd say the V-Moda's don't have much more bass than my apple ear pods.

Is my pair defective? Or is this normal?

Perhaps you are just not perceptible to it. Different people hear things differently, I have tried so  many headphones and people have tried my headphones and very rarely do people agree that one particular set sounds "best"

I guess it comes down to, are you happy with the audio, if so, dont worry about it

Looking at reviews places like "What Hifi" gave it 2 stars and said that the muddy bass overpowers the rest, engadget  gave it 8.5/10 sating they were dub heavy and great for hip hop/dance etc, and trusted reviews gave it a 9, saying "clean bass sound"

But they do all seem to agree there is an added bass emphasis. Thing is "audiophiles" (I use that term sarcastically and not to actually mean real audio professionals)  tend to all say that "OMG it must be flat", "well you see that incrased bass ruins music and they are just fashion headphones" but it really depends what you listen to. They might not be suited to say classical music, but  if you do not listen to that, then why does it matter

Also remember bass doesnt have to be thumpy bass. high bass headphones can just have a tendency towards low frequency, therefore everything through the headphones will sound more dull and heavy because the diaphragms tend to be looser in order to provide the low frequency. You might not have noticed because it would effect the entire range,as in the highs will be lower, as will the mids, so everything has "bass emphasis", maybe try some more balanced/treble headphones in a store? and judge for yourself

Audiophiles never had any connection to being a "real" audio professional. If for example, we want extra bass in rap, the artist should've put more bass in the music in the first place, so I turn around and give the artist the evil eye. The dictionaries I checked define audiophile as a person who really cares about high-fidelity music. Fidelity meaning accurate reproduction of music which by definition means flat. So in other words, you're saying "audiophiles want flat FR", you're in a way saying "people that want flat FR want flat FR". It's one interesting thing to think about. (At least I find it interesting.)

Have you tried EQing to see what happens?

I mostly use these headphones on my desktop for gaming and listening to spotify, which doesn't have the best sound quailty, but I hear amazing mids and highs, but the bass is just not there.  Like, it is the equivalent of a car stereo with really good tweeters and 6x9's but no subwoofers, if that makes sense.  I can hear some lows from the 6x9's but the actual bass isn't there.

So many reviews say the bass is really emphasized, but in my case, its really under-emphasized.

Just compared with audio from my iPhone 5 and its the same.  I've tried bass equalizers, but they make everything super dull and the bass isn't louder, its just there more.

Bass there is no single type

my Dt770's go lowest and mimic the real low bass that seem to be the most audible when a car with an audio system worth more than the entire car its rolling on drives by

my audio technica solid bass ath ws55 focus more on a higher punchy bass and sound best on shrieking dubstep style bass rather than the lows from a band like massive attack.

I feel my crossfade lp is somewhere in the middle it goes low but not as the dt770 and still hits the midbass stuff

I think your beats are tuned for a different bass

I think myi problem is that there is bass, but it is so so so so quiet compared to everything else.

Try letting a friend listen to them. If he comes to the same conclusion then maybe try RMAing it.
