y is the cpu generation, not the w
w tells you when the CPU was manufactured, which tells you when the laptop was. (which means you should be relatively up to date in terms of IO as well as a promise of support for however many years)
x tells you the tier,
z tells you just more info if needed (like this is zen3+, not zen 3, or dragon range not phoenix)
It also tells you that its all valid for use in the current year.
There is a problem with laptop OEMs where they cant sell NEW laptops with older 1000% valid CPUs because people think the laptop is old and wont have support.
This really is far clearer then the older (and current) intel way of doing things when you dont know what 10th or 11th gen mobile CPU actually was. Could it be tiger lake? could it be ice lake? idk. there was three generations of intel 10nm chips that existed concurrently with 14nm chips before intel 7.
as you have noticed how the nodes are all different.
4 core Zen2 ported to 6nm are really small, so yields are really high and chips per wafer is insane, so yes, very cheap and the performance is completely there. Hence why the code name is Mendocino and not the same code name as any previous zen2 chip
the rest spreads the loads across a large amount of nodes allowing price performance to scale far better across the entire line up.
Rembrant has always been that way, notice the codename is Rembrant-R, as in a refresh of it
same with Barcelo.
