Hi guys,

I will be upgrading my current setup (Ryzen 5 2600, Wraith Prism, Gigabyte B450 DS3H, Corsair 32 GB 3000 RAM, Crucial 500GB SSD, Gigabyte Aorus 3070, 750w PSU) over the holiday season. I will keep my GPU and PSU as is.

My workload is 40% 3D CAD design; 30% gaming (1080p 144hz and VR); 30% various productivity tasks (light to medium photo/video editing, website development, deep research with 10-50 Chrome tabs and 2-5 Firefox tabs open simultaneously, etc). My 3D CAD program is not multithreaded but likes high-boosting cores. So far I've bought a Gigabyte Aorus B550 AX V2. I will also move to at least 2TB NVMe SSD, possibly 4TB if I go for the 5900x. I expect to build a new PC after about 3-5 years.

At this time, I can't quite make up my mind on the new processor - 5700x or 5900x, and if the 5900x if I should go for 64GB RAM + 4TB SSD.

Setup 1:
5700x (170 eur), Wraith Prism (0 eur), Corsair 32 GB 3000 RAM (0 eur), Crucial P5 Plus 2TB (107 eur) = total 277 eur

Setup 2:
5900x (280 eur), Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (37 eur), Corsair 32 GB 3000 RAM (0 eur), Crucial P5 Plus 2TB (107 eur) = total 424 eur

Setup 3:
5900x (280 eur), Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (37 eur), Crucial 64 GB 3200 RAM (90 eur), Crucial P5 Plus 2TB (107 eur) = total 514 eur

Setup 4:
5900x (280 eur), Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (37 eur), Crucial 64 GB 3200 RAM (90 eur), Samsung 990 PRO 4TB (240 eur) = total 647 eur

Thanks to all who try and help!
Cheers

Are you atm having RAM issues ? If not don't get more

With  main usage being  productivity  I'd  get the 5900X and  an SSD, 2TB  or 4 according  to yours needs

Thanks for your reply, PDifolco!

No issues with the current amount of RAM or the particular sticks atm, it was more along the lines of making sure it matches the more powerful processor as well as the plans for an upgrade in 5-ish years (as the higher end of the estimation).

That extra 200MHz isnt enough to justify the upgrade when you gonna have to switch to DDR5 anyway. Just stick with the 3000 stick, in fact id bet that those older 3000C16 sticks would be a better thing to overclock on. This guide also comes with DRAM identification guide.

You kinda answered yourself, id just get the 5700X with the cooler. It does have XFR instruction so you can unlock the TDP and boost it to high heavens through PBO.

Thanks for your reply, SorryBella, and for the videos and documentation you've linked!

It seems to me that you're saying a lot with a few words because it's quite obvious to you but since I'm way more novice than you in these matters I will go over my understanding of your post to make sure I've got your points right.

Your recommendation is to go for the 5700x instead of the 5900x because the difference between the two is only 200MHz and not to bother with an upgrade to 64GB DDR4 because I won't be able to carry it forward to another build in the future as all newer generations are based on DDR5 (and even if they support DDR4 it won't make sense 3-5 years down the road). Also, my current RAM sticks are likely to be more suitable for overclocking.

The rest of your post raises more questions than answers.

  • What is XFR instruction?
  • How does this allow for unlocking the power limit?
  • Why should I bother with PBO at all since the second GN video you linked says that it might or might not work (around 32min 40sec)?
  • How high would I realistically be able to go? (estimation, naturally, I am aware of silicone lottery and other variables)
  • If unlocking the power limit of the 5700x makes sense wouldn't the 5900x benefit more from it as it already has a higher TDP (65w vs 105w)?
  • Why are you mentioning only PBO and not AutoOC too?
  • If overclocking the 5700x makes sense wouldn't the 5900x benefit more from overclocking (due to the higher number of cores and higher clock-speeds)?

Cheers!
