First post so please bare with me.

I’m starting my 2nd build since I can’t stand my Alienware. Huge mistake buying that. I’m planning on going all out for this one.
I was looking at getting the Msi meg godlike z790 until I read a certain review, explaining that the M.2 gen 5 slot shares with the x16 slot making it a x8 which is a problem because I’m getting the 4090. It’s confusing the heck out of me. Do all m.2 slots do this?? If not, how can I tell if a mob does this?

(I've been out of the pc building game for years. My first & only build was with the 780 when that came out.)

Also, please let me know if there’s any other advice you think I might need.

thanks! IMG_0188.thumb.png.7576c5e35969555c630042757ee1f43a.pngsorry for the long post.

All Gen 5 M.2 slots on Z690/Z790 do, as that's the only way to get Gen 5 M.2 slots on LGA 1700.

If you need Gen 5 M.2 slots, you really should be going AM5 rather than Intel, and if you don't need Gen 5 M.2 slots (they're largely pretty pointless) just don't use those slots.

Gen5 is pretty useless anyways when gen4 is already basically useless for the majority of ppl

Youll only see a diff if you do r/w heavy stuff like high res video editing or something like that

Budget is unlimited for the most part. It won’t be a custom waterloop.
USA

Gaming at 3440x1440p & 4k

interesting choice not going for a custom loop considering basically unlimited budget but oh well not like those aesthetic focused done to death custom loops are any better than a liquid freezer ii 420

d15 is basically obselete due to the peerless assassin/ak620 and their variants so might aswell save money and get a smaller less painful to fit cooler

Afaik liquid freezer ii is still on top in terms of aio

with an unlimited budget id look at phase change and get the cpu to subzero temps but thats not really a matter of only budget since you do need some skills and knowledge to build one (or atleast the block if you just use a regular ac unit), but hey you can run 6ghz+ allcore

nah. Deepcool’s got a thinner rad and performs a tiny bit better (plus LT720 looks a LOT better)

but the LF2 is still the best budget choice since you can get b-stock for really cheap

Oh, will the m.2_1 run at full speed? I believe gen5 is the current version so I want the max speed I can get. I’m looking at the crucial t700+2

Gen 5 runs hot from all the reviews I've looked at.  What cpu do you plan on going with for your build?
