iPhone 15 USBC to Lightning issues

So Apple has an official USBC to Lightning adapter https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUQX3AM/A/usb-c-to-lightning-adapter
It supposedly supports power as well as data transfer.
However, when I've tried plugging in any lightning accessories, I get an "Accessory Not Supported" error.

This seems like it will affect a lot of people who have what are now "legacy" devices that are important (blood glucose meters, etc).
