Hi all,

I upgraded to a RX 6950xt three weeks ago. I also had to get a new PSU as the one I had wasn't enough for the new GPU. I have been able to play games with no problems running any games I try at the expected FPS. While on a zoom call for University my PC locked up and only after closing Chrome did it stop. Ever since then if I have a browser open it locks up the system and I have to Alt f4 or ctrl alt delete to get it to stop. It only seems to be web browsers that causes it but I need to have a browser open to do my work.

I have tried everything I can think of to fix the issue and nothing seems to be working. I have tried:

Running DDU (I have done this at least 10 times at this point) removing both the old AMD drivers and NVIDIA just to be sure.

Reseated both the RAM and the GPU

Put my old GPU back in the System (the issue doesn’t seem to be as bad but still happens)

Clean install of windows.

Running Virus scans with multiple different antivirus.

Trying different web browsers (Edge, Chrome, OperaGX and Firefox) all have the same issue.

Turning off hardware acceleration in web browsers seems to make the lockups less common but still happens.

I have ran Memory diagnostic to check ram. (No issues were found)

I ran hardware monitor then replicated the issue and there was no noticeable spikes and all the temps look good. On task manager moving the browser window around did spike the CPU quite high but this wasn’t an issue before the upgrade.

Thanks to the clean install of Windows I now cant even get to the settings page of edge to turn off hardware acceleration so I am writing this on my phone. At this point my only other choice would be to RMA the card but I am not even sure it’s the GPU thats the issue.

My specs:

XFX Merc 6950xt

5600x

Corsair RM850e psu

Viper 16gb ddr4 RAM

Asus ROG B550 motherboard

Any suggestions will be appreciated I have ran out of ideas at this point.

It looks like you've done pretty much everything.

Have you tried booting a Linux Distro like Ubuntu to see if the problem persists.

TBH, not really sure where you go from there but if I'm $hit outa luck with Windows, I do quickly boot a Ubuntu Live USB stick and see if I can replicate the problem.

If it your PC still $hits the bed with Linux then its defo a hardware issue but what????

Would the live image be sufficient to test it out or would I have to install it?

Yeh. Linux has a great feature that allows you to boot from the install media and test it rather than install it. Its a bit sluggish as its having to load from the USB stick but it works and a handy diagnostic tool

Since the new GPU has 2x the memory, and from what you said about closing Chrome fixing it, looks like there could be some "confusion" in shared memory. Try finding in BIOS settings something like VGA memory size and adjust it accordingly.

Thanks I'll try that and see if I can replicate the problem.

I ran Ubuntu and tried a few browsers and even tried to force the issue by opening up almost every app and then opened 20 tabs and had 0 issues. looks like Windows is probably to blame but I don't get how the clean install could have not fixed it.

drivers...  are usually the problem.. look for older versions of the drivers you have to test if it works any better.
