Toasty 7700X

I just built a new PC. I went with a 7700X & 7800 XT in the Meshify 2 Mini, where I thought the GPU would be the biggest concern. Alas, the CPU is running quite hot considering what I've done to it so far. I knew about the 95 degrees crap that Ryzen 7000 follows by default, but even after a successful -30 CO and manual voltage drops to 1.15 (95W max), it's still hitting 80 degrees under a Scythe Mugen 5 at moderate fan speeds. My old build used a basic tower on a 5600X that would have similar power draw & was comfortably 20 degrees cooler. And yes, the sticker was taken off... any ideas?

Is it on idle or stress test (for example Cinebench)?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's 80C on stress test

But it's extremely odd behaviour if it's 80C on idle

My System: Ryzen 7800X3D // Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX // 32GB DDR5 Kingston Fury Beast 6000 CL40 // Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT OC  // Phanteks P300A  // Gigabyte Aorus GEN4 7300 PCIE 4.0 NVME // Kingston NV2 Gen4 PCIE 4.0 NVME //

Seasonic Focus GX-850 Fully Modular // Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE // Phanteks M25 140mm // Display: Bezel 32MD845 V2 QHD // Keychron K8 Pro (Mod: Gateron black box ink; Tape mode on PCB and Keycaps) // Logitech G203 // Audio Technica M50X Headphone // Sennheiser HD 650 // Genius SP-HF180 USB Speaker //

And Laptop Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45 for mobility

Phone:

iPhone 11 (with battery replaced instead of buying new phone for long term and not submitting (fully) to Apple Lord

Samsung M12 (for backup because I'm cheap)

80+ degrees from stress testing, though regular gaming (~50W) temps were drifting into the 70s as well.

I remounted the Mugen & fiddled with undervolting a bit more - Cinebench is now hovering just under 80 degrees with higher clocks & slower fans. Games should be fine now that I've replicated that behavior from my old PC. Apparently 5 hours of tinkering is enough to make me forget that a 7700X is just hungrier than a 5600X... here's a relatively free Solution before I bluescreen IRL.

Lol, that is normal

I use 7800X3D on Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 and it has similar temps result as yours. The highest drift while gaming is probably 62C, and that is a really rare occasion

So you don't have to worry on about your CPU, it should be doing fine on gaming

Unless you have unique fetish on stress test all the time (I won't judge, we all have that dream sometime)

PBO undervolt does help a bit, but as long as you have use a great cooler such as Scythe Mugen 5, you can rest easy (even bluescreen IRL, Lol)

Update: It's now hitting 107 degrees just from loading up certain games. This is while it's undervolted to 1.2V...

I've now undervolted to 1.1V and a 95W load is still bringing the CPU to 87 degrees with fans at full speed.

It's progressively getting worse. It just shot to 90 degrees before the game screen was visible & shut off entirely.

I've remounted the cooler again & it's still hitting 78 degrees just from opening cinebench. Actually running it now leads to an instant 95 degrees & throttling to 5GHz within 10 seconds. What is the deal with this thing?
