I have the following machines

1: powerEdge R820 with 16 cores 32 threads 256GB ram DDR3

2: desktop with AMD Ryzen 5 5500 6 cores 12 threads and 42GBram DDR4 and GPU EVGA3050

3: desktop with intel i5 12600k 10(6p 4e) cores 16 threads with 32GBram DDR4

1: 140W but 25W when idle

2: 95W but 56 when idle

3: i have not tested it

I'm leaning towards the 3rd option because of the energy as it seems to idle somewhere between 20W to 25W from what they say online but I just got it today

What are you looking to do with your home lab?

My small home server is built on a less efficient platform, but I needed cores and RAM to run virtual machines for cheap, and considering the parts I already had on hand, Intel X99 with a Xeon E5-2690v4(14 cores, 28 threads, 135W TDP) was impossible to beat.

Your hardware configuration all comes down to what you need the server to do, and I would prioritize that just a little more than power consumption.

Thanks for the input, at the end I went with my third option
desktop with intel i5 12600k 10(6p 4e) cores 16 threads with 48GBram DDR4

It gives me enough cores and for anything and  it idles at 58W

the other 2 options were great but this one got everything I needed
