Hi,

My home server runs on a 5600G at the moment, it's great, but one of the purposes of the server is running dedicated servers, like for ARK as an example. (Just for friends, nothing massive). Recently we've run into issues with ping (even me, even though I'm on the same network as it?), I read somewhere that the latency is caused by maxing out the CPU (ARK only runs on 1 core for the most part). So, is there anything I can do to reduce the latency?

What's a good CPU to upgrade to if necessary? It must have integrated graphics.

Thoughts?

Cheers.

I don't think that will solve the problem, it's mostly just extra cores.

I think I'd try and confirm that with more certainty before you swap CPUs, because the only widely available upgrade with integrated graphics is a 5700G. There's obviously the AM5 CPUs which all have integrated graphics except for the 7500F, but you'd need a motherboard and RAM, which I assume you don't want to buy.

If you're not aware, keep in mind that your speed going out is often much slower than the speed coming in and traffic can be handled/throttled differently by your ISP and/or router.

In that case, your only option is to move to a new platform. There is no better CPU with integrated graphics than the 5700G on AM4.

All AM5 CPUs except for the 7500F have integrated graphics now, so you could get a Ryzen 5 7600 - that should be about 30-40% faster for single core performance. You could also look at getting an i3 12100 or i5 13600K on Intel - those would at least allow you to keep your current RAM if you go with a DDR4 board.

I reckon it's most likely the case, one core is pinned at 85-90% even with no players connected. I was worried that might be the case! Perhaps I can stick it out, and if it gets REALLY bad, then upgrade time. Will ubuntu server have any problems with swapping mobo? I know Windows dislikes that.

I don't think it's my upload speed, (it's about 11MB/s, not super speed but should be plenty for an ARK server). The latency is more of a recent thing now that everyone has large buildings and many dinos.

Damn. What CPU could I get that has very good single core performance, but at a decent price? (don't factor in mobo if suggesting non-AM4 CPUs) I'll look into upgrading, probably won't yet unless it gets really bad.

Before you look at updating platforms, I'd price out some 3rd party servers for Ark.

We ran ours for like $12 a month.  Played for a about 8 months, so was cheaper than hosting in our case.  May make more sense than upgrading.

Just another option.

The three CPUs I listed would be my go to for price/performance for single core with an iGPU at the moment. The Ryzen 5 7600, the Core i3 12100, and the Core i5 13600K.

You could also consider the i3 13100 or i5 12400 if the price of either is close to the i3 12100 to get a bit more clockspeed.

The reason you'd need to go all the way to the 13600K on Intel for 13th gen, and not the i3 13100, is that only the 13600K and up actually have Raptor Lake P Cores. The i3 13100 and i5 13400 are just refreshed versions of the 12100 and 12600K respectively, so don't have any IPC improvements.
