Hi,

My system originally was an intel i9 9900kf with a RTX 2070 super

My first upgrade was to a RTX 4080, the performance uplift was in the range of expected.

I then upgraded the processor, MB and RAM to

intel i9 13900k

ASUS z790-f

GSkill 32gb DDR5 RAM

After the upgrdade, both before and with a fresh Windows install (both win 10 and 11) the graphic performance is abysmal. Down to sub 15fps on 3D Mark (timespy) and this is reflected in actual game performance, - before CPU. MB upgrade vs after.

Is there anything anyone might be able to advise to check?

You don't need a Z790. B760 will do just fine.

Make sure you buy fast and responsive RAM.

CPU is insanely hot so you'll have to make sure your cooler is sufficient, case airflow as well as fans themselves.

If PSU is above 800W~ you shouldn't need to upgrade that.

the display port from the monitor is plugged into the 4080, and as far as I can tell, the iGPU is disabled in the bios

Getting anything spiking usage during the games?

Run 3DMark. Good bench as well as able to share us screenshots and run itself on here for us to see. It'll show you if you're way below expected performance.

no, GPU usage remains low-non existant.

It is like the 4080 is not being utilised, but from everything I can see, it should be

You should try GPU-z. In the Sensor tab, you get a parameter called PerfCap Reason.

That parameter will tell you why the GPU doesn't perform higher. Values can be Thermallimit, Powerlimit, Clocklimited, Idle, and a few others I don't remember. Getting the value of this parameter can certainly help to diagnose the issue.

so after more troubleshooting, I plugged the card into another PCI-E port (gen 4) and it works far better

The performance of the car is a little lower than expected, but at least it isn't the abysmal performance I was getting before

i9 13900k & 4080

Timespy 19,440

CPU: 22,319

GFX: 19,008

Digging into the output of GPU-Z and MSI after burner, comparing what info is being displayed now to then, it seems the card is not being detected correctly in the Gen 5 slot. I only have a gen 4 riser, I had assumed that this would be fine, and it would just run at gen 4 speeds, but could this perhaps be the cause?
