First server build

I'm looking to build a server rack for the first time. I'm getting a new built house and got the wife on board to transfer the stuff over to a nas because we just a closet full of HD that are full with crap like picture videos files ect just sitting there not doing anything. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions because it would be nice to have one area for everything like the router and nas.

Are you gonna ventilate the "closet" where you'll put all the devices?

Would you also please provide some info about "what's gonna go in there" for estimate some base suggestions?

Not English-speaking person, sorry, I'll make mistakes. If you're kind, maybe you'll be able to understand.

If you're really kind, you'll nicely point that out so I will learn more about write in good English.  🙂

Hi buddy, I'm no expert and a similar position as you.

I had a QNAP NAS plus a few PCs in the house sharing folders and another system running Linux with a few docker containers running to help with my home network like Pi-Hole and Lancache.

About a week ago I decided to amalgamate everything into a single box. After a quick post on these forums, I now have an URAID server up and running and am pretty happy so far.

All of my mismatched hard disks are in an array with double redundancy. 8 + 6TB for Parity. 4 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 1 for the storage array and a 1TB SSD for write caching. If I need the space, I'll move the 6TB into the storage array and just have the 8TB for single redundancy. Unraid demands the parity disk(s) be the same size (or larger) than the largest disk in the storage array!

I have PLEX, Pi-Hole and Lancache all running in various containers and a 4TB SSD free and available if I ever want to play around with VMs.

All of the above fit nicely into a Fractal Node 804 powered by an ancient 3770k + 16Gb Ram. I suspect if I wanted to spool up some VMs then I'd run out of steam but for the NAS side of things and a few docker containers, I seem to be tip-top.

The only downside to UNRAID is its not free but it does appear to be the best solution if you have a bunch of different sized disks.

Right now at my current house everything is all spread out the router is in the guest bedroom and the full hard drives from the computers that are spread around the house are sitting in a closet space under the stair.

In my new house that's being built the room that the rack would go in would be on its own thermostat. I'm looking at trying to put a router or modem in the rack a network switch and 2 nas's one for the family and one for my business.
