HDD failure

I just found that accessing a TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 1TB 3.5'' is very slow and it makes a constant clicking noise. The HDD was used very little for offline backup in the last 5 years. I own several of these, but it is the first failure for a long time. I try to power and check every HDD at least every a few months, but I am wondering if the failure was caused because I was not using it often enough?

No, it would just be interesting to hear. The dt01aca100(which is actually a rebranded hitachi deskstar hds721010dle630) is a pretty rare drive to find failed. I assume it would sound like this:

No, this drive would have failed regardless of how it was used. I have one from 2013 that had only 200 hours on it, it now has around 1200 now and is working perfectly(started using it this year).

No, this drive is definitely failing. You didn't include the smart attributes part of the cristaldiskinfo, but at least one of them has failed, causing the "bad" health status. I assume it would be read or seek error rate, or reallocated or pending sector count.

It could indicate mechanical problems, or just bad HDD.

 

the clicking noise may be just the read HDD retraining,. 
 

HDD are precisions mechanical storage, even the position they are sitting may impact the lifespan. they die usually 5-10 years of age, some lasting 15-20, but only some.
