I recently purchased a second hand pc. Everything about it is great, except the display cuts out randomly. The only way to fix it is a reboot. This will happen randomly- while I’m browsing, playing a game, or anything else.

This issue doesn’t seem to be related to how hard the gpu is being pushed. I noticed that when I tap the cable going from the psu to the gpu, it causes the issue almost without fail.

This pc has a 3070 which is supposed to have at least 650W psu but this pc has only 600W. I tried an older card and had no issues. I was wondering if the connector on my gpu is broken or if maybe it could just be a psu issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Sound like the cable or connector has a fault. I'd replace the cable as a first option, to see if it fixes the issue.

I would try installing the drivers through Nvidia Geforce experience first. If that doesnt work maybe the HDMI/DISPLAY port is damage, try another port.

Most expensive option is the power supply; the 30 series gpus have had over current issues with power supplies. They have really high power draw spikes, you can actually see this happen in a LTT video where linus runs 3090's in Sli ( 7:30

)

I don’t think the cable is the issue. The psu is not modular but it had multiple power sources for the gpu. I tried different cables and they unfortunately had the same issue.

I did do a fresh install for my drivers on experience and it didn’t help. I have tried the hdmi and display ports and they all have the same issue. I will check this video out! If I can see the same power spikes, would that confirm that it’s a psu issue?

There could be something straight wrong with your GPU, but in the video the way Linus's PC cuts out seems to be how you describe it

If jiggling the cable reproduces the issue and you can rule out the cable then that would only leave the GPU's connector as the point of failure.

So I bought another gpu- the exact same 3070. It is somehow still having the same issue?? Even though I’ve tried different cables from the psu, jiggling the cable still causes the pc to lose display. I guess maybe the entire psu could be the issue? It’s very strange that moving the cable causes the issue though.

Went to Best Buy and bought a 750W Corsair psu. Replaced my old one and the problem seems to be fixed! Thanks for the help guys! :D
