Hiya All,

I recently purchased some new parts as a gift for my husband for his birthday/anniversary gift and unfortunately am running into some issues.  Originally I was told that everything from his previous build would work with the new parts, minus the ones that are actually being replaced, I'm sure you all understand what I mean.  He has always loved computers, building them and enjoying the fun of making them look as nice as he could.  Sadly his MS has gotten the better part of him these past few months and he doesn't always remember everything like he use to.

When I purchased the "Motherboard", or is MB as he calls it, from Amazon they ended up sending us one that you could tell had been open.  I have been fighting with them for months to replace it but it has become a losing battle as they are not backing down nor will they allow us to send it back for a refund.  The place I went to requesting if the parts would all work with what he currently had I was told yes and that it would be really simple to do as we would just need to take out the old MB and put in the new as everything would line up.  Needless to say, as you already much pretty know what happened, that is not the case.  Looks like the cables are not lining up with where they had been disconnected.  They also told me that the power supply would work with the new setup but after looking we are missing one of the cables to plug into the new graphics card.  Naturally the old Lian Li strimmer wouldn't fit the new one, even know I was told it would, so I ordered a new one figuring that it would be okay but as stated before we are missing one plug out of the four to connect.  In other words there are only three cables to plug into the Lian Li strimmer instead of the four needed.  Maybe we are just missing the cable and just need to order it but then again I don't even know if the power supply will work with this new setup as he has been reading a lot but the responses have been all over the place from needing a 1300 to an 850 all working.

I am not sure if there is a way to test out the motherboard since Amazon isn't going to take it back nor refund us the money I spent, but I also don't want to spend anymore money if I don't need to as it has already gotten pretty expensive as you all can imagine.

Also not sure what type of power supply I need to get him as every article is completely different but do understand that if its needed then so be in I will get it so we can finish his new computer.

I was super excited for this gift and it just seems like it is road block after road block which is why I decided to reach out to you all as I have heard great things about the Linus Tech Tips community.  Any advice is much appreciated as I do want this to be special and memorable.  I added some pictures of the old build, sorry if they aren't that great.

Thanks in advance

The motherboard issue may be easily corrected. The motherboard came out when 12th gen CPU were released. A BIOS update was required to handle 13th gen CPU. The label on the side of the motherboard box should contain the BIOS version number. For i9-13900K support it must be 2004 or higher. If it isn't or you don't know, updating the BIOS is relatively easy. See https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1038568/

I don't understand the comment about cables not lining up.

The GPU came with an adapter cable. Three 8-pin PCIe connectors from the PSU plug into it. The other end plugs into the GPU. If you can't find the adapter cable, it can be purchased. It's a "12VHPWR adapter cable".

The PSU is likely sufficient but Asus recommends a 1000W model, see https://rog.asus.com/graphics-cards/graphics-cards/rog-strix/rog-strix-rtx4090-24g-gaming-model/spec/. Frankly, the current PSU is not a great choice for the high-end components in the system. Replacing it is a good idea. Some good choices for replacement (that natively support the 12VHPWR connector)  are https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HXjBD3/thermaltake-toughpower-gf3-tt-premium-1000-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ps-tpd-1000fnfagu-4

There are many other choices that would also be good.

The AIO will likely need an adapter. The i9-11900KF uses an LGA 1200 socket. The i9-13900K uses an LGA 1700 socket. They have different dimensions and thus have different mounting geometry for coolers. The bracket can be ordered from Lian Li. It is also carried by some merchants. https://lian-li.com/lga1700-mounting-kit-announcement/

You need to be clearer on which cables you mean here. The board or the GPU? For the board, 2nd EPS plug is moved to the middle so you have to pull one of the 8 pin EPS cable out, and shift it to the middle grommet. For the GPU side, 4000 Series Nvidia uses a brand new plug, named 12VHPWR or 16-Pin Pcie. This is not intercompatible with 8 pin Pcie.

Yeah certain 12VHPWR adapters are designed to run on 4 8 pin power plug and all 4 needs to be plugged in, although 3x8 pin version exists. 12VHPWR adapters are honestly messy which is why a lot of people recommend just buying an ATX 3 PSU instead with 12VHPWR cable included.

As far as I know Strimer hasn't been updated with a 12VHPWR version. You pretty much have to give up on it and only run the 24 pin.

Asus has a way to identify its BIOS version without even booting. Find the 3rd barcode sticker from the top, near the CPU socket.

The last 4 digit on the bottom right denotes its shipped BIOS version. As @brob state, you need BIOS version 2004 or higher. If its lower, follow the linked FAQ on how to use BIOS flashback.

+1 on both recommendation, although for the most part 850W should be fine for stock operation. If you want to have headroom, 1000W isn't far in upcharge. Whoever said 1200-1600 is needed though is talking out of their ass, thought the severe transient power spike isnt being mitigated by Nvidia nor PSU OEM (spoiler: both sides have put their own foot to avoid it) or they heavily believed on avoiding putting above 80% load on a PSU. While that's a good advise, its not the end of the world if you do exceed that especially in this high wattage class where you are expected to bring creme de la creme ODM designs.

Thank you all for getting back with me in regards to the build, I do truly appreciate it.

The comment on the cables, i apologize, were for the motherboard.  Our understanding was that all the cables from the previous motherboard would line up with the new one as far as the normal cables from the case, power supply, and so forth would line up.  Pretty much doesn't but it isn't a problem as we will just need to re-route the cables from the case and new power supply, from your recommendations above, to the new motherboard.

Also appreciate the heads up on the AIO as we didn't even know yet as we aren't that far.  I will go ahead and get the new bracket ordered for it as it is still pretty new.

This was the new Lian Li cable we were told to get for the new GPU but based on the comment above they don't make one, so do I need to just send this back and use what is with the new PSU we get and the cables it came with?  Don't want to blow anything up haha.

I will look at the side of the box and snap a picture a long with looking for what you requested in regards to the BIOS later today and upload it but upon reading and looking at what you all sent over it seems pretty simple to do.

Again, really appreciate all your help with this.

Thank you

The linked strimmer is for 12VHPWR GPU connections. It can be used with the new GPU and presuming the Thermaltake or MSI PSU I linked above, can be run directly between the PSU and GPU. The Corsair PSU may still use an adapter cable, supplied with the unit.

I went a head and ordered the Thermaltake a long with the bracket for the AIO.  I also ordered a couple new fans from Lian Li that had the reverse functions so you don't see the backing and looks a little cleaner.  I also order some Noctua thermal paste for the CPU and lastly a vertical mount bracket for the GPU.

Here is a picture of the sticker on the side of the box, as well as the one on the motherboard.

Thank you again for the help

The motherboard sticker indicates it was released with an old BIOS version, 702 released at the end of 2021! It appears that you may have to update the BIOS. Use the USB BIOS Flashback feature to do this.

I received the PSU today, and also the Lian Li correct Strimmer.  Thank you for pointing that out because I honestly would not have noticed.  I'm still waiting ont he bracket for the AIO but since the m.2 from Samsung was on sale I went ahead and ordered another one.  Hopefully rest come in this weekend so we can start putting it back together.
