6800 or 6800XT?

StBrahmintippa

Budget (including currency): $550 USD

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming at 1440p60. Mostly RPGs and strategy games. Also, some light coding, browsing, and watching movies/videos.

Other details: My current build here.

My 1660 is finally showing its age, and I'm debating whether I should get a 6800XT or if a 6800 is good enough. I mostly play RPGs, and recently got a 1440p monitor, so I'd like to be able to run things at 1440p60. I was also hoping someone might be able to recommend a manufacturer. It looks like XFX, Sapphire, and PowerColor are my options. Would I run into trouble with my PSU? I feel like my 600BR might be due for an upgrade as well.

Thanks in advance!

I'd say get the 6800 and put some money towards a better cpu but make your own informed descision with benchmarks ^^^

That's not a legit benchmark site, come on.

On average, the 6800XT is going to be around 10% faster (give or take) than the 6800 on 1440p.

A steam survey...

Eh?

To the OP , Based on various benchmark sources(tomshardware , HW Unboxed aswell as techpowerup) it looks like a 6800XT is around 10-15% faster depending on the games being played.

Whether that makes sense from a cost perpective is entirely up to you.

Both are solid 1440p cards and you can't go wrong with either.

I have said it once and i said it again.

If you don't know what you're saying, you might be better off listening in than trying to chime in. Or you know, do your own research on the topic like i did.

Im gonna go across the grain and say that you should go for CPU upgrade instead. Depending on the RPG and strategy titles, you might benefit from the L3 cache bump on the 5000 series instead.

Get whatever is cheaper for example sometimes I've seen the RX 6800 and 6800 XT almost neck and neck but one time I got the 6800 for a crazy good price nice version too., the XFX Merc for a 260 EURO, 6800 XT was 400 EURO so nobrainer. If the price difference is minimal then get the XT.

Thanks for the input! I mainly play Bethesda titles (Starfield was the final push for me to upgrade), Paradox games, Zomboid, and Kenshi, and my 1660 currently makes light work of all of it, including Fallout 4 at 1440p. I noticed my GPU doesn't meet the system requirements for Starfield, but my CPU does (somehow), which is why I prioritized a GPU upgrade. I was planning on getting a 5000 series CPU in the next few months anyways, but I'll consider getting a new CPU first.

I don't know ehere in the world you are. But checking around, If I had to change anything it would be the CPU and Ram.

32GB of 3600MT 16/19/19/19.. will set you back 75USD, around 20USD more than what you have picked. But it is twice as much.. And 16GB is so 2015...

Also a 5800x with 8 cores is abvout 15USD more than your 3600x

As for 6800 vs 6800xt. I have both and in the types of game you play, I'd say both is fine

To answer your later half of your questions, if you do decide to get GPU, the brands you mentioned are all decent, just make sure you're getting higher quality type (e.g. Sapphire Nitro+, not Sapphire Pulse).

600W may be okay for RX 6800 but a bit too low for RX 6800XT, unless you undervolt some to save more power. If not then I recommend at minimum 750W PSU.

PC spec: CPU: RYZEN 9 5950X | GPU: SAPPHIRE NITRO+ SE AMD RADEON 6900XT (Undervolt to 1045mV) | MB: MSI MAG TOMAHAWK x570 RAM: G.SKILL TRIDENT Z NEO 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3600 (OC to 3800 14-15-15-25) COOLING: NOCTUA NH-D15, BE QUIET! SILENT WINGS 120 & 140mm| CASE: IN-WIN 707 | 5.25" BAY: LG WH16NS60 INTERNAL BLU-RAY OPTICAL DRIVE | PSU: SEASONIC PRIME PLATINUM 1000WUPS: POWERSHIELD COMMANDER TOWER 1100VA

PERIPHERALS: KEYBOARD: CORSAIR K95 PLATINUM XT BROWN SWITCH | MOUSE: CORSAIR SABRE PRO WIRELESS | CONTROLLER: PDP AFTERGLOW WIRED CONTROLLER, DUALSENSE
DISPLAYS: LG 34GN8502x DELL S2721DGF | LG C1 48"

HT & audio stuff:  AVR: MARANTZ SR7013 | STEREO AMPLIFIER: YAMAHA AS-501 | SPEAKERS: DALI OBERON 7 & DALI ZENSOR 1 & 2x SVS-SB2000 | HEADPHONE DAC+AMP: TOPPING L30+E30 | HEADPHONE: SENNHEISER HD6XX, BOSE QUIETCOMFORT 35 II | MICROPHONE: AUDIO-TECHNICA AT9934USB | BLU-RAY PLAYER: PANASONIC UB820

Some recent benchmarks. Whether the premium and extra power usage is worth it to you is for you to decide. But HUB tend to be pretty thorough with their numbers.

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

I just bought the RAM last week, and since I'm planning on getting a 5000 series (either 5600x or 5800x, which support 3200 MT max speed) I think this is probably the best option. Also the 2x8 Kingston I have are from my last upgrade and are 2400 MT, so the 3200 is still an upgrade.

Also, the CPU upgrade is definitely coming, I just wanted to get a new GPU first. It's kind of arbitrary though since no matter which one I upgrade first, the other will probably bottleneck me until I upgrade it.
