Default Gateway Problem

Go to solution Solved by E-waste,

Try another port on the router.  If you have a PCI or express nic try that vs the onboard chip.

It sounds like a software driver issue, try using device manager, go to network updates, right click your network adapter and click disable, and make sure you can't get online to be sure you are changing the correct one.

Then, click "update" but not really to update, instead, change the driver.  Select manual, and "let me choose from a list".

Select the correct brand, and try every listing that is available for your adapter, until one is stable.  Sometimes the Microsoft branded one works better than the others.

Hello everyone. So I built a new pc from scratch, everything works perfectly, but the only issue is that every now and then I lose internet connection to my pc (it is connected via cable and not wirelessly). And according to the troubleshooter, this message pops up: "The default gateway is not available". After that, it automatically resets the ethernet adapter and the problem is fixed. The motherboard is the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2.

The solution I've tried but to no avail:

1)Reset the TCP/IP Stack (through cmd)
2)Disabling and enabling the network adapter
3)Updating the netowrk adapter drivers
4)Disabling the save power option that turns off some devices
5)Reseting the router to factory settings (Did not do that myself)
6)Replaced the ethernet cable.

Replacing the cable, stopped the issue from occuring multiple times throughout the day, but it still happens once or twice every other day. Is there a permanent solution to this problem?

The default gateway is your router.

If that is unreachable, the first thing to check would be if the router itself is periodically rebooting. See if it has any logs.

If a cable change fixed the problem for some time, it might also be a good idea to check the cables. Does it go around a sharp bend, does it get pinched anyhwere?

The cable goes straight to the motherboard. No tangles, no bending. Just a straight line, with the rest of the cable ziptied.  The router I have now was swapped, because the previous one kept reseting at random times, but it was quite a while ago. I've contacted my ISP provider and they told me that the router in their end is fine and should be working properly. They only told me that there might be a disconnect once in a while.

As stupid as it sounds, I'd try using  a wireless connection for some time.

If the issue persists, the router is faulty. If the issue goes away, you got something wrong with the ports / wires / adapter.

Good luck !

There is another computer connected wirelessly in the same router, but there is no problem. No default gateway issue there.

I think we are getting closer 🙂

Now, if you connect your computer wirelessly, does your issue go away ? The other computer may work fine but we still don't know if your computer works fine wirelessly instead of via an ethernet cable.

Sorry for the long delay, but I was caught up with work. So, I've been connected wirelessly for about 7 days now, and no problem. Then I tried connecting via usb tethering through my phone for a day and a half, and yet again no problem.

At least, you got a stable connection in the mean time 🙂

So, your router seems to be working ok and your computer is able to make a connection via wifi. The problem lies in the wired connection then.

You said that you tried a different cable without success. You tried updating the drivers and fiddled with power savings on the adapter without success either. I am out of ideas for solving that wired issue. Unless you created a Windows network and entered some strange parameters, the default gateway should be accessible.

One last thing to check. Take a flashlight and look closely inside the Ethernet ports of your computer and your router. There are 8 metal pins inside each connector and they should be parallel and not touching each other. IT doesn't happen often but sometimes you may have a pin that bends enough to be touching another one. This can be the source of your problem.

As a final step, if nothing still works, you may have a faulty motherboard. Try contacting the seller or the manufacturer and see if they have a solution. You may need to RMA the board.

Good luck !

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.

So, just an update. It seems that, that particular motherboard has an issue with some network drivers from realtek. I had to use a different driver than the one that the auto update from windows was suggesting, and that seems to have solved my issue. It's been 2 weeks now and no connection loss or gateway problem. Thanks for the suggestions and advices.

Would you like any tips to limit website tracking with browser addons, filtering websites while on cellular data and wifi or anything in that realm?
