Hello there,

I have a XMG Zenith 17 laptop, which is basically a modified clevo P870TM-G I think. It has a Nvidia GTX 1080 however after 5 years it has now died. At least im pretty sure it died, screen artifacts even when nothing is running and event viewer showed errors relating to TDR. Now I have to replace my GPU but getting a 1080 is basically only possible in used condition. So I'm thinking of upgrading, but to be honest i have but a rudementary understanding on the topic. Is it possible to Upgrade the GPU, and if so what things do I have to keep in mind? Does the Architecture of the new GPU need to be the same? Thank you all in advance.

That’s likely an MXM 3.0 system, which is good news and bad news.

The good news is you can replace the GPU.

The bad news is you’re likely going to be paying a couple hundred dollars even for a 1070.

The worse news is that most laptop manufacturers, even Clevo, which has great cross compatibility, have extremely limited MXM cards they can support per model. For instance, I had a P151HM that could ostensibly support all kinds of MXM form factor cards, but the main board bios only supported 3. And only 2 of those would get sufficient power with the included adapter.

I only did cursory research, so I may be wrong, but I did laptop repair for a while, and while you could get a laptop with an MXM gpu back up and running, it was rarely, if ever, worth it. And we never had a situation where a significant upgrade was possible.

You could try here, it is the remains of a forum I used to belong to since about 12 years ago, Notebook Review, which closed last year or so. Some of the remaining members started this site. I had a Sager for a long time (Clevo)and used these people for much knowledge. You may be able to find out which MXM GPUs will work, and maybe a line on a used one or a laptop with other issues you could get for dirt cheap. Some really great and knowledgeable people there. Anyway, good luck.
