Budget (including currency): ~4000 CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Strictly gaming. Main games I see myself playing in the next little while: Baldurs Gate 3, Starfield, and Anno/TotalWar/Cities type games.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I currently have a 4k LG 32" Monitor for use with my mac. This will be my main display for awhile. Pretty sure its only 60Hz, in the future id like to look into a 1440p 144Hz setup. For now I'd be playing at 1440p or 4k if i could manage. Not really sure if locking FPS to 60 would be best or letting the game just run at whatever FPS it could manage would be best for now.

Most pricing is from Memory Express or Canada Computers. Both do price matching.

CPU: 749.99 - Ryzen 9 7950X (7950X3D is ~200 more and I don't know enough to know if thats worth it)

Graphics Card: 1799.99 - Asus ROG Strix 4080 seems to sit well with me for budget/power trade offs. $6-700 jumps between 4070 TI and 4090.

RAM: 144.99 - Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB DDR5 5200Mhz CL40. There are a million flavours of ram... The RGB looks fun.

Motherboard: 614.99 Asus ROG Strix X670-E-F. Bundled with the 7950X at 1219.99. Seems like a good deal?

PSU: 209.99 - Gigabyte UD Series 1000w 80+ Gold. Seems like a good PSU for price.

HDD: 129.99 - Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 1TB - I have fast internet and not picky about storage.

CPU Cooler: 169.99 - Corsair H100i Elite Cappelix? Like ram, theres a million options. I like the idea of the Noctua NH-D15 but they are hard to find in my area.

Case: I don't know. I like the look of the Lian Li O11 Mini Air. But I also like room to work in. Not picky at all here so happy to get recommendations!

One day I'd like to get into the crazy custom water cooling stuff, so a case that supports that would be nice.

Total from Memory Express before price matching is ~$3800.00

Thanks for your time!

My thoughts:

  • I would just get a good enough computer to try some gaming (I understood that you are new to PC gaming?) and upgrade it in the future, if need be.
  • I would get a cheaper CPU (like the 7800X3D) as well as a cheaper GPU (maybe a 4070Ti or RX 7800 XT, if that was an actual card).
  • That motherboard is way overkill too, just get the cheapest one that does everything you want it to do and does not have horrible reviews - unless you just want to over spec and did your research on that one
  • I would go with at least 2TB of storage, especially at your budget.
  • That RAM is really slow, get at least 6GHz AFAIK? Check for lowish timings as well.
  • Everything else seems good, but you could get a lower wattage PSU if you end up going for a lower end CPU/GPU.

I like my Fractal Define R5. It holds a lot of HDDs, which is likely not important to you. But I like it, even though it does not support 'crazy custom water cooling stuff' unlike the O11. It might be important to note that I got it for free.

I would skip that one, I have not paid for a Windows license in my life. Get some ice cream and a grey market key instead, or just some ice cream

A $4000 CAD budget and you're advising to skimp on the o/s?

I would not call it skimping, I just do not see a value in buying an official license. It made sense before Win10, but you kinda do not need one any more, or at least I do not.

  • 7950X is extremely overkill. I would recommend the 7800X3D or 7900X3D instead.
  • For 4k, yeah that gpu would be great for that actually. If you're planning on mostly playing at 1440p though, you can save some money there as well and get a 4070Ti, which would be more than enough for 1440p.
  • For the RAM, see if you can go for 5600MHz CL38 or lower.
  • Do you need a X670 motherboard though? A B670 motherboard would be way cheaper and still have good VRMs
