how to make a garry's mod server

i have been trying to play Garry's mod with my fends over the internet and they cant join.  steam tells them the server is unresponsive.

Try using Hamachi, it's free and everyone that joins is basically on a LAN, but you're not. If everyone joins the network you create, they will be able to play.
