Going from 1080p to 1440p - which monitor should I go for?

Rainbrew

Hey everyone, I'm finally in a position where I'm able to upgrade my GPU and will be getting a 4080 in the next few weeks (I want to not upgrade for several years and the 4090 is simply too expensive). I'm currently running an Acer Nitro VG270BMIIX (1080p, 75hz, 24”) and would like to make the jump to 1440p to better utilize the new card.

As I'm upgrading from 75hz I don't really care for crazy high refresh rates since anything above 120 should be a noticeable improvement so I'm mainly interested in something that has impressive colours and good contrast (OLED is too pricy sadly). When playing certain games I've had issues with being unable to distinguish objects in darker areas without cranking up the brightness to an uncomfortable level, so I would like my new panel to be able to handle darker games with ease. I don't play any competitive games or do too much creative work and plan to mainly catch up on single player titles that I've missed out on over the past few years.

I've been doing some research and I'm still uncertain as to what monitor to go for. It seems that the Odyssey G7 is fairly popular in my country (Poland) and has a great contrast ratio, however it is no longer recommended by rtings or Monitors Unboxed in favour of other monitors. I’m not sure why this is, but the pricing of this monitor is pretty good and QC shouldn’t be a significant issue due to an easy return process should the panel be defective. The Alienware AW2723DF is often listed as a similarly priced better alternative to the G7, however in my case it’s about 25% more expensive than the G7 and  not as easily available. I also see the LG 27GP850-B being recommended frequently, and although the price is great, it seems like there are issues with backlight bleed which in my use case would be quite noticeable as I generally play games in the evening.

Additionally while researching I came across the MSI G274QPF-QD which seems to be a slower, more colour-accurate competitor to the LG monitor, however as it’s an IPS Panel I assume that backlight bleed is still a potential issue here.

Pricing:

Odyssey G7(27”): 2199 PLN

Alienware 27”: 2718 PLN

LG 27GP850P-B: 1499 PLN

MSI: 1449 PLN

What monitor would be best for my use case? Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated as despite my research I still feel like I have no idea which one to pick up.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

From your list, I would suggest go for this - LG 27GP850P-B if you are not demand on HDR and want to save some cost.

If you want to tryout HDR, then the Alienware AW2723DF as at least it is HDR 600 which should be the minimum requirement for HDR instead of HDR 400.

The LG 27GP850-B is generally the best value monitor atm in the european market. The G7 is also a great monitor, but the curve is something you love or hate. Backlight bleed is also possible on VA monitors.

If you have the money for the G7, i'd recommend to get that one. If you want to save a buck and still get a great monitor, the LG is the best choice.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

If you're not into crazy high refresh rate then it's down to either LG or MSI. You made the right conclusion that LG has better pixel response times while MSI has better colours, but given you want more gaming focused monitor I would go for LG.

I'm not overly sensitive with BLB / IPS glow (as long it's not REALLY bad) and I know someone that hated it and switched to Samsung G7. Speaking of G7 it's still great monitor today if you decided to go with 240+Hz.

You may need to try sRGB mode or lowering gamma on monitors preset to see dark areas better.

Well its definitely a good thing you are upgrading because 1080p at 75Hz would certainly be a complete waste of a RTX 4080's power lol.

While 1440p is a great resolution with plenty of detail, keep in mind that the RTX 4080 is actually a very capable - TRUE 4K card alongside the RX 7900-XTX. Both cards are easily capable of about 90 FPS at Ultra Settings and nearly 120 FPS at high settings at 4K.

I would say join me in the 3440x1440p realm as the UltraWide e gaming experience is pretty amazing but Ive been finding out that your choices of good monitors with good panels and features are extremely few and still quite expensive as well.

If you are dead set on going for 2560x1440p, then definitely get a 240Hz Monitor. As soon as a game is even slightly light on the load or you even turn down just 2-3 settings from Ultra to high in most games, ull certainly max out that 240Hz refresh rate in a wide variety of scenarios.

240Hz is almost commonplace for 2560x1440p these days anyways. Just keep in mind that games already feel perfectly smooth and responsive at half that refresh rate, so feel free to absolutely crank every setting in every single game for many years to come 👍
