Laptop display broken

Hello, I'm having trouble with my laptop display, its hard to explain so I included a few photos of it. Basically about 1/3 down the screen there's a black line. Above it it might be fine for a few seconds then it does all crazy with lines, Below it the display will freeze every 10 seconds or so then the colour distorts and I get even more lines. 

 

Do I need a new LCD? Is it just the connection to the graphics card? It was fine 2 weeks ago, I didn't need to use it until last week when Spring Semester started and I found it like this. 

 

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
