Howdy,

I'm building a new computer that's refusing to post. My parts are

Motherboard - ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/AX

CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 5700X

GPU - Radeon 6700 XT 12gb

Cooler - Noctua NH-L9a-AM4

Power Supply - Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold Full Modular

Ram - G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB

Troubleshooting I've tried so far:

Used a AMD Ryzen 3 3100 to update the bios to latest release. I've double checked all my components are plugged in properly.

It posted just fine with the 3100 but with the 5700x installed only the motherboard receives power to some glowing leds, cpu cooler fan does not spin. This is my first time posting here, so apologies if I forgot to include any necessary information. Any and all help trying to troubleshoot this is very much appreciated

What BIOS version did you update to? When you have your 5700X installed, do you have any blinking status LEDs? I'm not 100% sure after doing some digging if your motherboard has any diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard.

Browsing too much and not posting enough. Feel free to PM!

Something like this happened to a PC of a friend who I upgraded.

He has a MSI B450 board and was using a Ryzen 3300X. He bought a Ryzen 5600X recently so he asked me for help in updating the BIOS since he wasn't tech savvy.

After updating the BIOS while still on the 3300X, it was a success and booted into Windows. But after I shutoff the PC and replaced the processor with the 5600X, it refused to post. I tried several things and by chance, the PC booted finally into Windows after being stuck on a black screen for 5-6 minutes. I was checking for information on my phone at the time so I just left the PC alone. To my surprise, it started to boot.

I updated to BIOS L2.61, the latest one listed on asrock's website. For all the checking i've done I can't find anything about this particular board having status LEDs myself, but the ones that do turn on have a constant rolling RGB rainbow effect so I assume they're cosmetic

Clear CMOS and then try again, if no luck, I'd say go with the below.

MEMORY TRAINING can take time (Which would explain the black screen as seen above by the other post) but, if you have no CPU Fan spin - try another header, you dont want prolonged exposure with no fan.

I would suggest only installing 1 memory DIMM in slot 1, then if no post, move to 2,3,4 and so forth in the same.

With a CPU change you can end up with memory training, which can take some time.

You can confirm this CPU purchased is new? Or used? Confirmed it is not faulty?

If you stick the 3100 back in, even with out CPU Cooler - it will post still?

If you can, then, I would suggest you have bad memory. Also, if you're going to post with the 3100 again, double check your BIOS version to ensure it has taken.

I have a spare B450 board here if you're in the GVRD to test.

No luck clearing the CMOS, I'll leave it for some time now in case memory training is all that's needed.

The CPU was purchased as new, the only old part being the ram which is reused from my last build. I don't have a spare setup to confirm that the CPU is not faulty, but the RAM has worked just fine over the past 2 years.

I'll swap the CPU out soon if I'm left without any luck and respond separately with any updates

Lastly, what does GVRD stand for?

Greater Vancouver - youre probably not here cuz if you were you'd know haha.

I've helped people in the past locally cuz sometimes you just need a 2nd set of eyes or hardware to test to help 🙂

If your memory does not work with the new CPU, I wonder if it is not supported or has a compatibility issue with that CPU.

Looking online, it SHOULD work. Mobo + CPU + Memory all is compatible from what I am seeing.

Try using the ram in every channel available (just 1 stick) sometimes you have a bad memory channel and the 5000 series might have less tolerance than the 3000's.

Give it 5-6 minutes each for memory training.

Theres a guy on youtube greg salazar whose done ALOT of troubleshooting with bad memory sticks / ryzen 5000's where he could not get memory to work after a cpu upgrade.

His video's might help you identify if you've got a similar situation.

Thank you so much for offering but I am fairly far across the pond lol

Checked both of my ram channels which wasnt hard since this motherboard only has 2, checked with both sticks independently but no dice. Double checked for myself that the ram is compatible and it should be.

Only other thing i could think to do was install the 3100 CPU again to verify the BIOS updated correctly, which it had, before deciding to switch to BIOS version 2.40 hoping for a miracle basically. Reinstalled the 5700x and I'm back where I started.

Think I'll give it a day and a couple of greg salazar's videos before I give up and take it into a shop

It's tough when youre the computer guy and dont have anyone near by with a rig to help test with.

Identifying faulty parts makes troubleshooting much easier.

So far the only thing we cant test to rule out is that CPU.

I saw your post where you said you had some LED's on the board, usually its for CPU/MEM etc.

When you have the PC powered on, if you can take a closer look at the LEDs to see if the CPU is in Yellow or Red, then, that would tell us that board is having an issue with the CPU.

Then, if the BIOS is up to date with the newest and works with the old chip, it would point to that CPU as an issue with the LED if it was lit in red/yellow for CPU.

Oh sorry I might've misrepresented how they appear and attached some photos this time, I found them listed on ASROCK's website but they're only specified as onboard LEDs. I've also tried hooking up speakers to check for beep codes.

It does seems like a CPU issue at this point but no pins are bent, all parts should be compatible and it's out of the box

From what I can see on asrocks manuals, yellow is indicated as a ram issue. But, if these are just for looks, then, I dunno if that matters.

But, like I said, RAM and AM4 can be finicky. If you can reset the CMOS between swapping CPUs, that might help.
