I have a 1 TB seagate HDD that I've been using for a while now, today it started connecting and disconnecting on its own, and I figured that it must be a problem with my usb ports as they have done that before as well (disconnected my drive). But now the device won't show up in the explorer, or in the disk part. But I can feel the "hmm" of the drive, that means it's spinning. Can anyone help me out here?

What type of external drive is this?

- 3.5" one typically have a their own power supply. Could be a power supply issue. 2.5" ones are usually powered by the cable. You can try another port, cable, or PC. I've seen powered USB hubs (do not use a un-powered USB hub), that are out of spec and cause problems.

- This could be a sign of a bad drive honestly. However before jumping to this, I would make sure you've tried all other options.

- Sometimes it can be just the controller for these drives. These are just hard drives in these enclosures. Sometimes you can open them up and plug the drive in and recover your data.

It's a 2.5-inch one, it wasn't an external one it came with my laptop. After I upgraded to an SSD I bought an enclosure and made it an external one. I have tried another ssd in that enclosure and it works so the problem is the drive. But how can it just die, i thought HDD were supposed to slow down before dying. Also i can hear it spinning inside so the mechanical bits seem to be working.

Your last attempt could be trying to put it back in the laptop, and see if it's recognized, but I doubt it will be. Odds are it's dead. Just because the platters are spinning doesn't mean the rest of it's functioning. HDDs can fail in many ways. The best case is that they give you some kind of indication that they are failing, and you get to pull data off of them. Either a SMART warning, or they start making unhealthy noises, etc. However everyday, HDDs, and SSDs fail with no warning what so ever. That;s why backups are always important.

Doesn't matter what it is it can fail without warning.

Alright thanks. Guess I gotta live without that data now sadly

Connect it via internal SATA and see the smart, and disk management
