20230627_054430.thumb.jpg.4c00965f00a8951b21bb0e481e8ca35e.jpgI swapped out an old corsair aio on my intrl 4930k because im pretty sure the pump was going out or maybe it was the fans.  Either way it was making noise and I wanted something much quieter.   So I picked up an air cooler.  The Noctua NH U12A and two NF-F12s to attach to the top of the case.  The CPU cooler fans are blowing into the exhaust while the top fans are drawing in fresh air.  According to my bios monitor Im posting temps as high as 40C and in Windows using HWmonitor, the Asus software that came with the board etc all seem to concur.  In bios the cooler fans are reportedly spinning at 950rpm appx.  The recommended max for the chip is like 70 or 80.  So a bit concerning.

So far it hasnt reset itselfband its not acting like its thermal throttling.  I tested a few games, used my internal Avermedia 4k to stream to twitch and watch said stream.  The temps stayed roughly the same and the performance seems typical of what Ive gotten in the past.

So the question is.   How can I get this temp down?  Am I missing a setting in bios?  Is it just a bad sensor on the board?

I restored optimized defaults in bios but I haven't dug into it much.  At one point I was going to explore overclocking hence the sorta overkill board but I never did.  So the only setting I really tweaked when I built it was the fan settings I swapped to ignore because I was running the AIO.  Thank you for any help you can offer.  Or just thanks for reading.

Im using a fractal design case its an EATX I forget the name but its as big as the Meshify 2 XL.  Im using Geforce 980 Gigabyte Windforce.  Asus X79 Sabertooth, 64GB of Gskill Ripjaws DDR3.

A bad sensor would be one possibility. How were the temps before you switched out the cooler?
Some other possibilities are:

  • The could plate has bad contact with the IHS of the CPU -> You have to reseat and maybe repast the cooler
  • The contact between IHS and CPU has deteriorated, I had that happen to me once. Could barely boot the PC without it shutting itself off.

80 degrees is also still fine for the CPU. How hot is your ambient temperature? If your room is around 30C having idle temps in the 40's is pretty common.

i cant honestly recall the temps before.  I wanna say I remember it running a little warm.  28c maybe but nothing this high I dont think.   Unfortunately it became a file server or me and the computer I let my niece use to play games on.  I haven't paid it much mind in a year or so.  Im going to try an reseat the cooler this week and see if that helps.  That was my thought as well.  The pc resides in a cool basement but I do turn on a space heater from time to time and that can warm up the temps.  Ill check tomorrow to see if the temps lower considerably with the heater off.  Thank you for your response.

Edit: And how would I know if the contact between the ihs and chip was bad?  I dont have the tools to delid... or the courage lol.

If it is actually cold down there, it could indicate a problem. I think at most you should expect a deltaT of 10C at idle and maybe like 40-60 at load. But your CPU might also show signs of aging. So maybe the heat transfer isn't as efficient anymore or it needs a bit more power than it used too.

Tjmax = 100c

If you are running stock clocks (which you really shouldnt cause its old) then constant 100c will be fine for decades

i assume its problably something to do with your case if its a solid front with no airflow or maybe your mounting/thermal paste

Might also be the garbage TIM under the ihs but as trivial as delidding and applying liquid metal is on a non soldered cpu i assume you dont wanna bother unless you overclock

what should i be running for clock speeds?

The case I think is fine.   Its got a grate on top drawing in air and two in the front and the rear exhaust.  And I did run it with the side panel of to check.    There wasn't much of a change.

So after leaving it on all day and coming back without heat its sitting at 31 - 33.  Ill pull the cooler off and clean off the thermal compound and aee if that helps this weekend and drop an update.  Thank you for your help so far its appreciated.
