Greetings dear Linus Tech Tips dwellers. Recently I decided I was going to go for a new platform and thus a 7800x3d instead of a 5800x3d and I have a few questions if someone can be kind enough to help with:

1) I plan to pair the 7800x3d with Gigabyte Aorus b650 rev 1.0 elite ax and 32gb of cl32 Gskill Ram. Would this be a good pairing?

2) I heard stories circulating about 9800x3d's burning out. Would I need to perform a bios update and if so, would it be better to do so after installing Windows or prior.

3) I currently own a Noctua Nh12a on an am4 platform. Would I be able to use the same mounting brackets on an am5 platform?

4) Should I be enabling EXPO or not. IS there any reason to/not to?

Thank you all in advance

The 9800x3d is not released, nobody knows how it will perform.

Do you mean the 7800x3d?

1. Yes! What ram speed? Get a 2 stick kit.

2. Yes update to the latest version immediately, so before Windows install.

3. Yes same mounting mechanism!

4. Yes enable it after updating the bios.

Thanks Sjaakie. The ram in question is Gskill Flare X5 cl32 at 6000mhz.

Full spec of your current pc?

If you already have a solid mobo and ram config theres no reason to move to a newer platform

Also any other upgrade plans? If you are getting a 4090 i guess a 7800x3d is viable but any lower and 5800x3d will handle em just fine

1) As far as support goes, there's no reason why it wouldn't be a problem. That said, Gigabyte is a brand that I personally have very mixed feelings on. Also I think Gigabyte, along with Asus are ones that have had problems with these CPUs cooking themselves. Me personally I've come to really like Asrock motherboard.

2) The bios updates should help mitigate any chances of things going south, but it's still something that you can't rule out the possibility of (realistically speaking, I'm sure you'll be fine). As far as bios updates go, I'd do it before installing windows.

3) You should check Noctua product page for that one. AM4 mounting brackets from my understanding only have guaranteed support for AM5 if they use the default AMD mounting hardware, that being those clip on coolers. Aside from that, support really varies.

4) Yes. Always have EXPO enabled if you're using AM5. Avoid buying ram that's marked as XMP, I made that mistake and I had to buy a different kit, cause the XMP ram just would not work on my system unless I kept clock speeds to default, which is just leaving so much performance on the table.
