IT freelancing: where to start?

I currently work as a network analyst 4 days a week. It's great, but I don't really do anything for the first 8 hours of my days off because my fiance works third shift and doesn't wake up until 3 or 4pm.

So I'm wanting to do freelance tech support. I was thinking about setting up an email ticketing system and charging $40 hourly (min 1 hour). Advertising on Facebook for now.

Problem, I don't know what I'm missing. What's a good open source ticketing system (or paid if I must)? I feel like I'm mostly targeting grandmas if I'm doing day shift home tech support how should I charge?

Has anyone else done this more professionally than friends and family? How'd that go?

I'm also going to update this thread with whatever I find and use, but I'm always excited for help!
