Refracting/Focusing/Diffusing LEDs in interesting ways?

Obviously there are a ton of diffusers for making LEDs give a nice even light, but what if I want to do a more crystal or laser-like split of the LED light?  What if I want to draw the LED light out into a flat line? A wavy line? A jagged random pattern, or a constellation of points?

 

I'm trying to play with ways to do things with the many LEDs in my build and I've been googling terms related to this for a few days but only diffusion gets any hits.
