Budget: $4,000 CAD pre-tax/shipping. I’ve sourced the parts in the list below for about $4,400 CAD including tax/shipping.

Country: Canada

Primary use: Gaming

Current/recent AAA games, including but not limited to:

  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Diablo 4
  • Far Cry 6
  • Jedi Survivor
  • Minecraft (modded high-res textures and RTX)

Secondary use: Moderate production work

  • 4K editing and sound mixing with Adobe suite, DaVinci resolve
  • Music production with Ableton

Timeline: I’m hoping to pull the trigger on this by the end of the month, or by mid July. I know prices will fluctuate between now and then, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

Current Build / Other details

Starting mostly from scratch (I have headphones, keyboard, and mouse). I’ve put together a tentative build with the following components:

  • CPU: Intel i7 13700K
  • GPU: ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Trinity OC, ZT-D40810J-10P
  • RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5 5600
  • SSD: WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe M.2 2280 2TB PCI-Express 4.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) WDS200T2X0E
  • HDD: Seagate FireCuda ST4000DX005 4TB 7200 RPM 256MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal HDD Bare Drive
  • MOBO: MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI LGA 1700 Intel Z790 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Motherboard
  • PSU: CORSAIR RMx Series (2021) RM1000x CP-9020201-NA
  • Water Cooling: DeepCool LS720 SE Liquid Cooler
  • Case: LIAN LI LANCOOL 216RX Black Steel / Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower
  • Monitor: LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B 27 inch 16:9 QHD IPS 144Hz

I am hoping to build this as a somewhat future-proofed computer (knowing the Nvidia 40 series is overpriced, but I am willing to eat that). I may expand to a dual monitor set up in the future, but TBD if I will jump from 1440p to 4K. I personally don’t need more than a 144hz refresh rate. That being said, I want to have the power to jump to 4K with high+ settings should I choose to do so.

I have workshopped this part list in other online spaces, but I have a special trust in the users on the LTT forums (I’ve done a lot of lurking, and have only made an account just now to post here). Please let me know if any part of this build doesn’t make sense, or if I’m overlooking any compatibility issues.

One key element I have been concerned about is the MOBO. I’m dead set on getting DDR5 and Intel, and I’m skeptical about how much overclocking I will do (if any). Still, I want a robust MOBO that has some headroom for the future, without breaking the bank on $600CAD+ boards.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post! Please let me know if you have any input on this build.

Hi, I was able to tweak some things and I was able to get the price a bit lower and make it just a bit faster with RAM and in some slight other areas. Also please note that there is no "Future Proofing" with Intel LGA1700 & 13th Gen. They have already planned a whole new different Socket for 14th Gen.

I have been building PCs for 30 years so if you have any questions please let me know. DM me if you would like me business email and website.

+1 for that system. LGA1700 is a dead-end. AM5 is just now starting its lifepath, so if future upgradability is also a concideration, AM5 is the way to go. Plus the 4090 is a 4090. Not really a substitute for that. Be it gaming or production, it's still untouchable.

I was doing my best to follow what the OP said. They had said that they wanted Intel. The customer is always right, I haven't been in business for 25+ years because I went against what the customer wanted, if I did that I wouldn't have a business. Sure I can make recommendations but if they are in control.

True, BUT you have to negotiate conversation with him to see where he comes from and why he has the mindset. Some people are set on intel/AMD because someone who they trust told them so, w/o them actually knowing how familiar this guy is with the topic. Others just had bad experience with Bulldozers and Piledrivers and didn't really care to check what was going on in the other team currently. If he has a good solid argument, not just "because it's better" or "xxxx told me so", then you simply agree and work on. If he is unsure though, you HAVE to give him the choice for an alternative while explaining the pros and cons. Everything else isn't good for the customers, it's only good for the business.

When someone who is unsure comes to me, i usually put together 2 systems - 1 intel and 1 AMD. Explain them what the pros and cons of both are so they can make the decision based on their priorities, not on someone else's. Here it's much easier, because in 90% of the cases the guys want a gaming system.

Hey everyone! Wow, thank you so much for the suggestions! Reading these new builds makes me realize I didn’t have a good reason for wanting Intel other than name recognition. Sorry if it made me come off as a bit dense in my original post.

I appreciate both approaches in trying to stick to what I said originally, but also doing a good job to sway me over to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D / 4090 build.

I’m leaning toward the 4090 now (given it actually fits in my budget - I thought it wasn’t possible!) Thank you PC HEROES, filpo, and QuantumSingularity

Thank you so much for this new build with the 4090. Do you think I would benefit from a water cooling solution for the CPU, or you think that Thermalright would do the trick?

That said, it seems the build including the 4090 does not factor in the monitor, which is a decent cost factor. I’ll have to consider both and see if I can will up the additional ~$500 to make the 4090 a reality, or stick to the 4080 build by PC HEROES. Thank you again for the assistance!
