Which GPU should I be choosing?

TryRestart
Go to solution Solved by TryRestart,

Update for some of you:

I bought the RX 7900 XTX and VR is smoother than butter for me on the Index at 144hz.

No problems at all at any game ive not seen it stutter.

Hey, I am looking at reviews benchmarks and everything but i just can't decide which GPU to get.
I was looking for a RX 6900XT (620€), 6950XT(660€), 7900XT(800€) and 7900XTX(1025€) from AMD or from NVIDIA the RTX 4080(1170€) or a used 3090(about 850 -+50€).
My current rig got an Ryzen 9 5900X, 32GB 3000Mhz CL16 crucial balistix and a RTX 3070 on an X570 MSI Gaming EDGE Wifi, my main monitor i use for competive games is only 1080p 165hz which i will change to 1440p >=144hz in the future and a 4K TV at 120hz for story games like cyberpunk or resident evil.
I also use my PC for VR with the Valve Index but i don't need the 144hz on it but would be a great bonus.
4K and good VR performance are my main concern but i would also not want to break the bank with the 7900XTX or the 4080 and now i can't decide - should i be going for one of the cheaper ones as i can live with lower graphic settings or wait and save up for one of those two.
The 6950XT and the 6900XT stung themselves into my eye yet i can't decide if that price up for the 7900XT is worth it as i am also a little concerned about power consumption but i would be undervolting the card.
Thanks!

edit: i only have an 650W powersupply which i would be changing too.

If I remember correctly, the VR experience on the 7000 series from AMD isn't too good. I'm not a VR gamer, so I can't vouch for the accuracy, but that's what I see a lot of on AMD reddit, etc. With that in mind, I'd say if you can get the 3090 closer to the 800, that shouldn't be too bad a choice. Possibly the 4070 Ti if the price isn't absurd either. If VR wasn't one of your big concerns, I would've said the 7900 XT or 6950 XT. Good luck with whatever you end up getting!

If you dont care about the cost of power go with the 6950XT - Your PSU should be able to power it

Looks much like my rig 🙂

With 4K 120FPS in mind, I'd say get a 4090 😄

If not possible, I'd say 7900XTX but not sure about VR experience (I don't use VR), so get a 4080

Anything less won't be really good enough at 4K, and RT on 6950XT isn't great at all (it's barely ok on 7900XTX, only RTX4000s are)

3090 are still overpriced...

Oh, thank you for clearing that up. That's good to hear. So 7900 XT would be my choice, @TryRestart lol

The 4070ti is a little bit too underwhelming for what i am trying to do but yeah i looked into it too, 3090 and the 4070 ti are about on the same price so the 4070ti would be better.

The 4090 is about 1650€ which is just too much for me, 4080 is also a bit pricey and 7900xtx was also one of the card i was comparing it to, as i need raw performance on vr i think as it is also cheaper the 7900xtx might be a better choice here for me, but yeah, prices. Power consumption is great tho on the 4080 from what ive seen but RT is not my main concern and getting those 120 fps is also not my biggest of all wishes as i am not always able to see it, like i said i can tune down settings.

Is that actually true? Couldn't really find something that confirms it, if yes i would be glad save up to it.

At the high end there is quite a large difference between "classes"

  • The King 4090 (used as reference below) 1600EUR
  • 4080 and 7900XTX , -20%, 1100/1200EUR
  • 4070Ti and 7900XT another -10%, 850EUR
  • Then the rest (6950XT, 3090/3080Ti..) another -10%, meaning -40% total... around 650EUR

imo if you want a good 4K card get at least 4070Ti/7900XT level of performance, the 7900XT is faster on rasterization but has worse RT, FSR no DLSS, etc

Oh strange? I've been seeing the opposite and built a pc for a friend that has a rift s + 7900xt and it works well.

Maybe there is a certain combination that plagues it?

Yeah, still a no go. This has been on their driver release note for many months.

2 months ago - stuttering issue

a week ago - encoder issue with oculus link

And when the frame rate is stable, it actually slower compare to 6900XT/6950XT.

Define 'great?'   I read somewhere, if you are choosing a 6000 card for VR because the 7900 isn't good - you should choose Nvidia. 🙂

I'm discovering AMD cards are relatively **** - support is lousy - not good for productivity and only good for standard gaming.

Great as in performance in VR is similar or better compare to equivalent Nvidia GPU but at cheaper price.
6750XT => 3060 Ti/3070
6650XT => 3060

RX 6950XT is probably the best price/perf VR gpu right now unless AMD fix 7900 XT VR performance issue.

Iinm, It perform within 5%-8% compare to 4070 Ti and cost $150-$200 cheaper, also come with extra 4GB VRAM, which you can't fix via software update.

So would you say, save/wait a bit more (even though i do wanna upgrade soon) and go with something a little higher end like the xtx and wait for driver fixes which will take ages, or go for 4080 or wait for new gen/cards infos.

I would be upgrading to an 6950XT if its worth it or the 6900XT as 4K performance is like 2nd for me and i tend to want VR performance to be a lot better than my 3070. - cranking down settings ain't a problem, intend to play RE 4 remake with better graphics tho.

My budget max for a gpu is max 1000€ or if i save up a bit more i could go up to 1300€ for the 4080 but that's just kinda too expensive for my likings.

Edit: i do know that when i will sell the 6950XT later on that i will get a lot less back, + i do productivity stuff like never or nothing to care about it performing too well.
Edit Edit: before i forget it, i do play on some emulators from time to time

You have a 3070?  I have a 3080, 10GB - so I am in the same boat as you except I split productivity and gaming - actually, productivity tasks is my priority and gaming is a 'bonus/nice to have' - I have gaming friends so it's fun to game with them.

However, you are asking about your user case - but, I just thought it was interesting you want to upgrade too and have the same questions.   I also worry about 'demand/market value' of my used card - I think it's already worth a bit less than when I bought it - although I do see prices range from $50 more to $50 less.

But, the current cards are too expensive fore me.    I am interested in the 4070 Ti (I concede it's pretty gimped and low VRAM), 4080 (wish it had more VRAM but 16gb is acceptable) - really expensive! and the 7900 XT/7900 XTX - these are pretty good gaming cards.   I like that they work pretty well in Linux but productivity use - is a major question mark and I fear they're just not as good as Nvidia - and the gap is still rather large.

But, that doesn't concern you.    I think you might like an upgrade to a 7900 XT or XTX - since they are less than a 4080.   If VR is of importance to you, you might want to find users who have used them for VR - and ask how they like them?   Plus, reviews of those cards with VR as one of the main tests.   For gaming in general - and at any resolution, they're probably quite sufficient.   RT might not be the best but a lot of owners claim the RT isn't that bad, comparatively speaking.

https://babeltechreviews.com/hellhound-rx-7900-xtx-vs-rtx-4080-50-games-vr/

I'm not too interested in VR but I think a 4080 is a good all-around card.   The problem is the price (imho).

VR performance over 3070 is probably around 30%-50%, not really a lot imo. If you can swallow 4080 cost i say go for it.

I would also pick the 6950XT over the 4070ti as they do not blow that many differences at each other and it being around 220€ less here.
4080 for 1200+€ is not really that worth it for me, even though it does have the RT performance (which i don't care about too much) and less VR problems (which i care about). 7900XTX could be a decent deal but the VR problems do bring me more to either nvidia or the 6000 series (6950XT/6900XT), maybe going for the 6900XT for now  and upgrading later on when prices drop a bit or drivers actually get good for VR. Waiting for RTX 5000 or RX 8000 could also become an option. FSR 3 is also something to consider comming out (hopefully soon).

Okay, then.   I was under the impression, Nvidia is a better performer in VR - I have read ppl say that in other forums.   Then, I found this site - and the reviewer compared the 4080 and 7900 XTX in VR - and the Nvidia card looked a lot better *which I linked in a previous post*:

That's the problem, apparently even w/o the stuttering,  7900XTX is slower or on par with 6950XT in VR. It's almost 2x cheaper compare to 4080.

Hence why i recommend 6900XT/6950XT over 7900 series for VR, for now.

  • 4 weeks later...

I believe things are about to change with the 7900 XT and 7900 XTX. I tried the new beta drivers (AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 23.10.01.41) and it looks very promising (from 70 to a stable 90 fps in the game I tried). Most VR games were running fine with my 7900 XTX, but it looks like AMD found and repaired the issue.

https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-23-10-01-41-vlk-extn

Fixed issues

  • Certain virtual reality games or applications may encounter suboptimal performance or occasional stuttering on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.
  • Application crash or driver timeout may be observed during playback of AV1 video content using DaVinci Resolve™ Studio.
  • Improvements to high idle power when using select high-resolution and high refresh rate displays on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs.

The VR wouldn't prevent me from choosing a 7900 XT - it looked more and more like it was a driver issue - and not hardware related.  If it's just gaming - that's the priority - then the 7900 or 6900 series is fine.   There's some complaints of crashes and stuttering - but, if you are willing to wait a few years, they should fix it.  😉
