Yes. You also need to replace the cooler mounting hardware, and figure out a way to desolder the IHS. IMO this just isn't going to be worth the effort.

Its either that or you have to build a block that can mount inside of the retention like this thing. 

 

 

IMO though delidding and going with liquid metal with conformal coating protection would be more than enough for LGA 1151 chips all the way up to 9900K. The thermal paste TIM was that poor.

It's value would be the experience and learning process not any possible performance gains. 

Yeah, I’m getting the 4 year itch to build a new system so current one would become a spare that I could tinker with. I’ve never delidded, but grew up building computers in the days of no heat spreaders, homebrew fan controllers, and 38mm delta fans…so a fun project.
