No display after screen timeout

My computer is doing all sorts of weird things, so I started to make a recovery USB. After a few minutes, the screen went black and I cannot get the desktop to show. Windows key, ctrl alt del, power cycle the monitor, re plug the DP cable, nothing. The backlight is on, the computer is on, but I cannot get the desktop to show. I'm hesitant to pull the plug on the tower because I was in the middle of making a recovery USB. After a while longer, the monitor itself will say "no signal" and go into power saving mode.

 

Behavior prior to this was that the system would momentarily freeze up for no reason. Streaming video would freeze, audio kept going, then it would basically fast forward the video to "catch up." Switching between chrome tabs seemed to set it off. I would also notice the freezing/stuttering while dragging windows around the desktop. Also, on startup, it doesn't show the mobo screen, just goes straight to windows login. I can get into bios by mashing DEL, but the traditional mobo/bios screen never appears.

 

5600x x570 F37 bios

4080 w/latest nvidia drivers

FWIW Boot drive is probably 10 years old (ssd)

Go into event viewer and look at the windows logs -> system. What errors or critical events do you have there that happen when the display freezes happen?

New symptom found. I told the computer never to go to sleep or turn the screen off last night so I could hopefully finish making recovery media. It did and the desktop was usable this morning, though still with the stutter nonsense. For "fun" I power cycled my monitor. Backlight only, couldn't get desktop to display. So any time the monitor goes dark, I need to reboot...

1. Storage driver error that sometimes precedes a kernel power error(power failure).

2. Windows service startup failures.

3. Crashing display driver.

4. This is not usually anything to really worry about, but some services can’t connect (DCOM error).

 

Try these steps:

1. Run system file checker by opening an elevated command window (right click and run as admin, or control shift enter) and typing in sfc /scannow. If your crashes are bad enough that it can’t complete, start windows in safe mode.

 

2. Again in an elevated command prompt, type in DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

 

3. Download DDU. Start in safe mode and use it to uninstall display drivers. Restart and reinstall latest driver.

 

4. Update BIOS to latest.

 

5. Make sure windows is fully updated.

If that doesn’t fix things my guess is your SSD is starting to fail. It’s old enough that’s a real possibility.

I've already done 1, 2, 4, 5 with no improvement. I would try #3 but now I have an even worse problem. I'd tried to boot from my recovery USB and install windows onto an M.2 pulled from another computer (drive was upgraded) but windows told me that the recovery failed. When trying to go into the repair options, it said that had failed too. So I put my original boot drive back in to get into device manager and take a look at the "new" M.2 only to find that now I can't get into bios OR windows. It just seems to sit there, push a signal to the monitor every so often, light up the backlight, "DP" "No Signal" and monitor goes to sleep.

I'm going to pick up a new drive after work today and try again with that. I do have a USB to Sata cable to look inside my original/possibly failed boot drive on my laptop if you've got any other tricks up your sleeve.

M2 drives can cause a no boot when they are fresh. 
 

Create a fresh windows install usb with windows media creation tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-installation-media-for-windows-99a58364-8c02-206f-aa6f-40c3b507420d. Plug that in without the m2 in the system. You should be able to get into bios and set usb to primary boot device. Also make sure that csm is turned off in bios. Then power off and plug in the m2 drive. On next boot it should go into windows install with the m2 showing up.

 

if this doesn’t work, you have some other hardware failure going on. Most likely memory.

I was finally able to get windows going by ditching the salvaged M.2 and loading the OS onto my samsung 970. It previously only had games on it so I didn't care about wiping it. Thanks for you help
